To be completely honest, Joan Rivers was never my favorite comedienne. Her hard-hitting jokes, told mostly at the expense of famous others (when they weren’t at her own expense) were too sharp-tongued for my taste. I thought of Rivers as overly venomous, sometimes tactless, and largely inappropriate. It wasn’t until I heard of her passing that I realized my latent admiration. In fact, it was the very dislike of her comedy that caused me to like her most; she ... Read More
Amy Poehler has a pretty special place in my heart, largely because Leslie Knope is my spirit animal, but also because Poehler is wise and fearless, and she is never afraid to speak her mind. Have you ever Googled "Best Amy Poehler Quotes?" Not only does she have two BuzzFeed  posts dedicated to her wise and honest words, but there are tons of other round-ups of her advice to the world - because it really is that poignant and amazing.  So, it's no ... So, it's right around the bend: the season of the flesh. It is about to be (already kind of is?) super sticky out, which means it's time to try on your old shorts/skirts/dresses to see if they still fit/look for an excuse to buy some cuter and trendier ones.  In being a people-watcher and shameless ease-dropper, I can't help but notice how much judgement is so casually thrown on women's dress--pretty much all the time, but especially in the summer, and ... I was always confused about my limited choices as a kid. Growing up with boy cousins, I remember wondering why I always had to be the pink Power Ranger, or the human girl from Ninja Turtles when we played with action figures. The only playscape I felt included in was Legos, and even still the main characters were mostly male, and they have become gendered in a way that limits the stories girls can tell during imaginative playtime.  Where are the ...  To put it simply, Dolly Parton is a force of nature. She is the single most successful female country artist of all time--selling over 100 million records--and she's living up to that title at a fabulous 68 years old. She's invincible. Apparently The Today Show loves her almost as much as we do. Here she is, strutting her stuff to promote the release of her 42nd album (!!!). Besides being a total BAMF, she is so impossibly adorable and kind ... Read More
In case you need more affirmation that beauty standards are a load of totally constructed baseless and ridiculous garbage, check out these vintage ads telling women that skinny is ugly, and gaining weight is necessary to look good and get dates: For the most part, advertisements have been and continue to be the worst, and whether it's pressure to be curvy, thin, or a robot, it's incredibly unfair and completely unjust to make women feel they are somehow ... I think we can almost all agree that thinspo and its cousin fitspo (that tries to not be rude but still manages to be so rude) are both kind of the worst. The intense "no excuses" attitudes reflected by bold fonts saying something aggressive over images of impossibly thin women sweating, is just annoying, not to mention dangerously supportive of negative self-talk, detrimental to self-love, and just bottom line not what we need to see or hear. There is enough ... Read More

"Not Happily Every After" is a new campaign launched on May 8th in Ireland, featuring this uncomfortable and eye-catching image:  The campaign focuses on sexual violence in relationships, with the caption: The fairytale never said anything about Prince Charming using sex as a weapon to exert his power over the beautiful princess, or demanding it from her even when she said no. The venture is a joint project between Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and ... Read More
I never thought about it before, but now I'm curious. Perhaps one of the most creative ways to get attention for a new single, the Dutch all-girl group ADAM decided to test their singing chops...as they climax.  Both oddly intimate and unexpectedly funny, the women fight their waves of pleasure as they try to remain focused on the melody at hand. This would definitely not be as cool, cute, or fun if it was not an all-girl group. Also more ... Read More
