Apple is a company known for it’s LGBT-friendliness, but if you looked up the word “gay” on the Apple Dictionary any time before this week, you wouldn’t know it. For a long time the dictionary defined “gay” as 1. homosexual; 2. lighthearted and carefree” and you’ll be shocked to read this one: “3 informal foolish; stupid.” Although we’ve all heard people misuse the word in that extremely offensive way, the dictionary’s inclusion of the concerning slang word validates it; it recognizes it as a correct and legitimate form of the word. This is the Apple Dictionary, not Urban Dictionary!
The teenager Becca Gorman is the daughter of lesbian parents, and when she looked up the word for a project on LGBT rights, she was understandably appalled. She tells Metro West Daily News, “At first, I was kind of in disbelief.” After telling her mothers, she wrote a complaint letter to Apple: "I assume that you are a pro-gay company, and would never intend for any one of your products to be as offensive as this definition was. Even with your addition of the word 'informal,' this definition normalizes the terrible derogatory twist that many people put on the word 'gay.'"
An hour later, her letter was returned in a phone call from a company representative. Shocked by the definition, they promised to remove it immediately. If you have an Apple, take a look for yourself. Way to go, Becca!
