More Comics and Cartoons for the Smart, Savvy Girl PDF Print E-mail

I am of the opinion that comic and cartoon art is very much a form of "fine art." It is the one medium where anything you can imagine can become possible. If you dream it, you can realize it with a pen and a piece of paper. Now more than ever women are using the comic medium to express smart, creative, and even sexy stories.

A few months back we did blog on webcomics by-women-for-women. Here are a few more suggested reads and artists for all you girly comic and cartoon lovers out there!

 Kinokofry by Rebecca Clements

Reading Kinokofry is like stepping into a pretty, pastel portrait of the world, with so much about it that is cute, and even philosophical. In this webcomic, you can expect to find anything from anthropomorphic mushrooms and bumble bees to friendly correspondences with God. All of it beautifully executed.

Love Me Nice by Amanda Lefranais

Definitely enjoyable. The art is excellent, with a very unique look and feel. Readers love the juxtaposition of Cartoons and “Cuteness” in a very Adult setting, and I'm really excited to see more of this all around

Kimono’s Townhouse by Dava Butler

Girly geekery at it’s finest, and what better way to express it than with…My Little Ponies? All of the attention to detail, the little props, the writing and the way the characters play off one another, all combined with the fact that the creator is so dedicated that she customizes multiple copies of every pony. Totally on my recommendation list.

Johnny Wander by Yuko Ota and Ananth Panagariya

While not particularly “girly,” this is definitely a favorite among the “slice-of-real-life” webcomics. It balances the every day with the surreal and somehow manages to make even the mundane seem fantastic, not to mention some absolutely lovely, and intriguing artwork. I wish I had a bit more Johnny Wander in my own life! Also, cats.

Girls with Slingshots by Danielle Corsetto

As previously mentioned back in 2009, Girls with Slingshots is still going strong, as witty and sharp as a comic based in the “real world” can be. It is a perfect blend of the cynical and sweet, with a strong cast of characters to keep things entertaining.

Molly Crabapple

No matter what she does, I love Molly Crabapple. She is well known as the founder of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, some parts burlesque, some parts fine art. She has also provided artwork for webcomics Backstage, at Act-i-vate, and Puppet Makers. Her work is inherently sexy and such a pleasure to look at with its light lines and brilliant color. Definitely highly recommended, particularly for lovers of burlesque and anachronistic aesthetics.

Jess Fink

More from the “whatever they do I love” illustrators/comic makers pile is Jess Fink, whose work is smart, sexy fun. She is probably most known for the sexy (and VERY Not Safe for Work) Victorian Robot Erotica Chester 5000 XYV to some rather fun musings on Jeggings and Ageing from her LiveJournal. Jess Fink’s art style is so fluid and stylized that even simply looking at her work is a joy.
