How freaking SWEET does this woman look? Tesnim Sayar, 21, is an art student in Denmark who started designing her own rebellious Muslim clothing and accessories after she bought a spiked bracelet when she was 12. Since then, she’s combined her religious garments with her goth-punk style and rocks handmade headscarf mohawks as well as plaid, piercings, and chains.
Her creative take on traditional garb could be controversial to more orthodox Muslims, but Sayar doesn't see any conflict between her style and beliefs. “I am Muslim. I like my religion, I like my scarf. I can not see an obstacle in why I should not be able to combine being both punk and Muslim.”
“I will go with it because I think it’s cool and suits me," she continued. "I have not designed [my clothes] to provoke. But my message is also that you should not continue to believe that Muslim girls are...boring…A friend of mine says that one defines a punk as '[someone] opposed to one...form of oppression [or another].' I’m tired of people’s generalizations and stereotypes about Muslim girls. Therefore, I am punk.”
