First Lady Dresses Appropriately, Still Offends

From buff arms to bare legs, Michelle Obama's extremities (or, rather, the outfits that show them off) have got to be the most demonized in White House history. In an editorial today about Mrs. Obama's decision to wear unfussy, mid-thigh shorts on a Grand Canyon hike, The Washington Post's Robin Givhan argued that while the first lady shouldn't be expected to wear tulle and lace on a family vacay, she should be careful of '[trying] so hard to be average that she winds up looking common.'
Sidestepping that the word 'common' drips with all sorts of pretentious venom, let's consider what we're talking about here. This wasn't a White House event. It wasn't a dinner, a fundraiser, a business meeting or even a minor social gathering--it was a vigorous jaunt through the hot-as-hell Arizona summer. For Michelle Obama to look any more pulled together than she did (and by the way, she looked cute, comfy and entirely appropriate for the day) would be to fool both herself and American women into thinking that it's possible, or even expected, to look perfect while, you know, exercising.
Look, I'm not so idealist as to say clothes don't matter--they absolutely do, especially when you live on the most public of stages--but can we please drop the sartorial concerns when they relate to an active afternoon with the fam? The first lady didn't show up to lunch in flip-flops; she put on a pair of shorts presumably to avoid passing out in a canyon. Relax.

seems like the press is always trying to imply that Michelle Obama is inappropriate in some way--wonder if that doesn't reflect some deep-seated racism in addition to the sexist obsession with women's bodies.

What's going on here is sexism under the smokescreen of "appropriateness".

She gets demonized and we have to look at half naked male politions trying to prove manliness.
Shorts on a hike in the hot weather is smart to me.
Imagine how it would have been spun if she passed out from being overdressed.

Michelle Obama's hair is chemically straightened so if she overheats all that would happen is she'd be sweaty and possibly have a bit of frizz.
It'd be great if she didn't straighten her hair. It'd send a message to other black women that straightened hair on a curly headed black women isn't absolutely necessary as a lot of black women seem to believe. But the world isn't ready for black women to wear their hair as they were born
The shorts look fine. People have nothing better to complain about!

Even so, I remain a fan of both of them and hope that their spirit and their smarts continue to serve them, and us, well!

woman" who always looks beautiful. Even though,
she is the "First Lady" she is foremost and first,
a mom. I applaud her for being herself regardless
of her husband's job.

Robin Givhan is black too, I'm sure she knows what happens to our hair.

Thanks Michelle for your shout out to us "common" American women! We vacation with sense . . . . particularly in the Arizona deserts!

Certain peple will continue to criticize the Obamas no matter what. It's OK. They are classy and above it all.

I thought one of the nice things about the presidency instead of royalty was the idea that common people are allowed to run for public office.
No one seemed to complain when Bush was going off on ranches wearing 10 gallon hats and whatever else it is people wear on a ranch.

As for her looking great in shorts, it doesn't matter. She could have looked hideous, but people still should have respected her clothing choice.
