From buff arms to bare legs, Michelle Obama's extremities (or, rather, the outfits that show them off) have got to be the most demonized in White House history. In an editorial today about Mrs. Obama's decision to wear unfussy, mid-thigh shorts on a Grand Canyon hike, The Washington Post's Robin Givhan argued that while the first lady shouldn't be expected to wear tulle and lace on a family vacay, she should be careful of '[trying] so hard to be average that she winds up looking common.'

Sidestepping that the word 'common' drips with all sorts of pretentious venom, let's consider what we're talking about here. This wasn't a White House event. It wasn't a dinner, a fundraiser, a business meeting or even a minor social gathering--it was a vigorous jaunt through the hot-as-hell Arizona summer. For Michelle Obama to look any more pulled together than she did (and by the way, she looked cute, comfy and entirely appropriate for the day) would be to fool both herself and American women into thinking that it's possible, or even expected, to look perfect while, you know, exercising.

Look, I'm not so idealist as to say clothes don't matter--they absolutely do, especially when you live on the most public of stages--but can we please drop the sartorial concerns when they relate to an active afternoon with the fam? The first lady didn't show up to lunch in flip-flops; she put on a pair of shorts presumably to avoid passing out in a canyon. Relax.

Michelle Obama looks fabulous in everything. Good for her putting comfort ahead of "protocol". I wish I looked half as good in shorts.

seriously, a "commoner"? Um, last I checked we didn't have royalty in this country and that was one of the things we liked about it.

seems like the press is always trying to imply that Michelle Obama is inappropriate in some way--wonder if that doesn't reflect some deep-seated racism in addition to the sexist obsession with women's bodies.

Does Robing Ghivin know what happens to a black woman's hair when she overheats? If the First Lady came back with an afro, then she'd really have a fit!! Let the woman wear shorts. Yeesh.

OMG that is ridiculous. I wasn't aware we were using the caste system here. Good for Michelle for not being so caught up in appearance she trys to rock silk while hiking or something.

I don't think Michelle has to *try* to be average - she *is* average. I heard her speak and met her on a speaking tour she did in Iowa at the end of '07. She is as real and down to earth as it gets. If she wants to wear flip-flops, that would be fine by me, too.

What's going on here is sexism under the smokescreen of "appropriateness".

Caste system rhetoric aside, I think she (and her family) serves as an excellent role model for health and fitness! In an era where obesity complications are taxing our health and our health-care system, the Obamas show us that you gotta get outside and exercise!

She is healthy and looks great good for her.
She gets demonized and we have to look at half naked male politions trying to prove manliness.
Shorts on a hike in the hot weather is smart to me.
Imagine how it would have been spun if she passed out from being overdressed.

I agree that this whole discussion is ridiculous. There is definitely racism in the mix. Definitely.

Wow! Not that it should matter, but she looks totally beautiful in her shorts. You would think that having the most glamorous first lady in years (decades?) would please the fashion crowd. Living in Tucson, I can't imagine being critized for wearing shorts in the summer here.

@sarahj

Michelle Obama's hair is chemically straightened so if she overheats all that would happen is she'd be sweaty and possibly have a bit of frizz.

It'd be great if she didn't straighten her hair. It'd send a message to other black women that straightened hair on a curly headed black women isn't absolutely necessary as a lot of black women seem to believe. But the world isn't ready for black women to wear their hair as they were born

The shorts look fine. People have nothing better to complain about!

I agree that the focus on the first lady is kind of ridiculous. However, as Givhan went to great pains to point out in her article, this photograph is an image of the First Lady disembarking from Air Force One, NOT an image of the First Lady on a hike. Presumably there's plenty of time in between getting off the very air-conditioned airplane and getting to the rim of the Grand Canyon when one could change into more appropriate hiking attire. Gawd, I feel like the oldest woman in America when I say it, but I do think that the first couple tends to err on the side of informal in their attire and, in the case of the president, in turns of phrase like "wee-weed up." When I think about the seriousness and importance of the job he's got, I feel like I'd prefer a president and first lady who are about 20% more formal.

Even so, I remain a fan of both of them and hope that their spirit and their smarts continue to serve them, and us, well!

Clothes are clothes...she'd be criticized if she stepped off the plane in more formal attire when everyone knew she was going on a hike. I like Michelle, she's classy and doesn't seem to subscribe to all the crap. Let her wear what she feels comfortable in. Give the woman a break! On to more important news of the day!

I'm sure we all have more important matters than Michelle Obama's attire. I think she's a "real
woman" who always looks beautiful. Even though,
she is the "First Lady" she is foremost and first,
a mom. I applaud her for being herself regardless
of her husband's job.

The Robin Givhans of this world are just jealous of how buff Michelle is! They are also clearly plagued with too much spare time.

I look forward to the day when women will stop being so scrutinized over their appearance, bur rather on character, creativity, and more internally-based qualities. It's hard to believe that in the 21st century we still hold on to such antiquated perceptions and paradigms about women. Let's evolve.

When I saw this pic splattered every where, I thought "this woman is so cool". She is traveling the way many Americans do in the summer . . . with her kids and comfortably. So refreshing! Had this been a mom from a previous administration, they would be completely dolled - up, and you [the reader] would know they never actually hiked the a national park, but flew over it.

As usual, Black women can't catch a break. I'm surprised they didn't call her a 'ho' for wearing shorts.

Thanks Michelle for your shout out to us "common" American women! We vacation with sense . . . . particularly in the Arizona deserts!

Certain peple will continue to criticize the Obamas no matter what. It's OK. They are classy and above it all.

Considering how hot it was that day (I live in AZ) we are lucky she had any clothes on at all! Give the woman a freaking break. You can't escape the kind of heat that his here, and getting off of a nice cold air conditioned plane... coming from somewhere under 110 degrees is the WORST. She looked completely appropriate for the occasion.

Seriously! Should she be wearing pill box hats and shift dresses while hiking? What decade is this? Perhaps since she is a woman, she shouldn't be hiking, it might cause her to sweat too! Oh dear, anything but that! Ridiculous!

The same people complaining about Michelle Obama wearing shorts are the same folks that love the idea of Sarah Palin bathing in moose blood and fish guts.

My head is going to explode.

I think the complaint is weird in itself. The complaint was that she should be trying to be average/common? How seems that shorts are pretty average to me.

I thought one of the nice things about the presidency instead of royalty was the idea that common people are allowed to run for public office.

No one seemed to complain when Bush was going off on ranches wearing 10 gallon hats and whatever else it is people wear on a ranch.

People should not be judged by their clothing but by their actions, and one's job or marriage to a politician should not determine one's right to wear shorts in the summer. People spend too much time castigating each other over trivial matters.

As for her looking great in shorts, it doesn't matter. She could have looked hideous, but people still should have respected her clothing choice.
