Before She Went Gaga

Long before Lady Gaga was lady gaga, she was just little old Stefani Germanotta, an NYU student at the Tisch School of the Arts with a mean set of pipes who knew how to tickle the ivories. This video makes me really curious how she went from this rather plain-Jane image to her current over-the-top one. I see the talent here, but no evidence whatsoever of what is to come. Where did that come from, then? Was it her idea? The suggestion of friends? A manager? Very curious.

this chick is amazing! an amazing role model! she worked her way to fame from the ground up (unlike hannah montanas who think cause theyre parents were a one hit wonder at some point in the 80s that they are naturaly talented), has an amazing voice, and as far as style shes amazingly daring and confident.

She's an amazing marketing role model, for sure.

it's all her idea. if you watch any of her interviews, most of her design concepts come from her own head, with the help of a few stylists who are also her close friends. she knows her fashion, and now that she's famous she has people like alexander mcqueen making haute couture shoes for her. she always has a definite vision of what she wants and isn't afraid to pull it off.

I don't agree. There is absolutely no way to be so recognized all over the planet for style icon status without a fantastic stylist. She may have alot of say in what she does and how she appears, but the designers whose dresses she is wearing did NOT necessarily create those for her-she is merely a great muse to get their work out more with. Just look at Alexander McQueen, that firm has gotten soooo much more attention in the last year, and it has alot to do with her constant use of that label.
Yes she is still a performance artist-but still performance.

Well, according to Wiki, she dropped out of school and started doing burlesque shows, so im sure thats where the strange style came from. But she grew up a very talented young girl who was pro at piano before the age of ten. I personally like that she is different from everyone smilies/smiley.gif but my god she changed so fast!

It is so sad that she is so talented but got caught up in the trashy main stream. I guess that is what the love of fame and money will do right?

i definitely don't think she "got caught up in the trashy main stream" that's silly. she is still so talented, even more so because she challenges the mainstream music industry with her style and her talent. her singer/songwriter stuff if boring, talented sure, but totally boring.

i definitely don't think she got caught up either. after she left college, she went on the grind in NYC. she worked really, really hard. and if you saw any of her shows right before she went really big, you would know that not much has changed about her. other than the fact that designers would now die to have her wear their outfits. she has always had a vision that she follows. long live the gaga!! smilies/kiss.gif

People are really judgemental... smilies/sad.gif It's called growing up and discovering yourself. Anyone of any interest in this world has tried on a lot of hats in their lifetime and embraced influences from a lot of different places. None of us are one thing from birth to death, so why do we expect something so impossible from people who are successful... I can't wait to see how she changes and hope she keeps keeping me entertained.

At least we can hear her voice and musical talent in this video rather than actually trying to distinguish her in between crazy and annoying electronic sounds and repetitive choruses.

I liked her before I saw this vid, and now I like her even more because here's the proof that she does have a voice and musical talent. I love her daring styles anywhere they're coming from. A big round of applause for her, she's Pop and fabulous.

Fear not Norah Jones, she has barked up a completely different tree. Glad to see that she is able to artistically express herself in more than just music. Congrats you talented Lady!

Yes. She is awesome. And her stage mannerisms are present in this video too, just maybe a little quieter than what we saw on Ellen and Leno-

Her "style" is fun and quirky and a little creepy (which is a positive thing IMHO). Why is anyone slamming her for that? If she was trying to be caught up in main stream trash, she'd have orange skin, blonde (not white) hair and her albums would consist of cutesy songs about boys and how they've made her happy/broken her heart. Oh yeah, and I'm sure there would be mention of a dance floor in there somewhere.

I don't think she's gotten caught up. She is a style icon with talent. Her performance idols are Freddie Mercury and David Bowie. Both men had and have a lot of talent and yet they are performers too. If viewers can look past her style and listen to her music, they will see that she knows about the "trashy mainstream" and its dangers. From this song, "We are a generation twisted by a myth" and "I'm gonna change the world with my lips" to the song "Paparazzi" when she discusses the thirst of celebs to be noticed and loved for anything! We have a lot of trashy celebs out there that get famous for their looks and actions more than their actual talent so it is easy to think that Lady Gaga is one of those. But with a little research and an open mind, one can see that she is not a talentless trashy celebrity. smilies/grin.gif

She's said in interviews that on an appearance much like this, she figured out she was losing her audience despite that obvious talent, and she just took her top off.

Why is it so hard to believe she might actually be the evil genius behind her own creation? She wouldn't be the first.

Wow, she has a beautiful voice. Maybe it's because I'm a little out of her fan demographic, but I love this and am not so into her popular songs. But good for her.

I think she's awesome! At first, I really didn't care for her. I thought she was another gimmicky performer; one of those singers who can put on an amazing stage show but has minimal musical talent. I changed my mind when I saw her on Saturday Night Live. It was just her and the piano and I was blown away by her talent. Regardless of what she wears or how she chooses to express herself onstage, she is a gifted musician at her core, and I think that's what really makes her great.

Sure she can sing and play the piano in this video. BUT, the way she became famous is by singing about sex, and dressing like a slut. That is how our society is and she capitalized on it, like many stars before her. (ps, i dont like my 9 year old singing her song ..i want to ride your disco stick!)

I just don't get why people are so into her. Mediocre piano skills, 90s-style singing with too many runs, she's not ugly but not gorgeous either, the songs are annoying/mostly disgusting/repetitive with poor resolves. She sings with a lot of emotion- I'll give her that- but many many man perform with emotion. That's the basis of it all! The clothes are just weird for weird sake. Didn't we see all this before with Marilyn Manson? She's no Brian Wilson circa 1966 OK. She's not the Beatles. She's not even as good as KD Lang. She's a mediocre attention whore at best. They really need to put music programs back in schools because it's really really sad what people actually find to be good these days. You people need a music education. & BUST- why don't you report on Lady Sovereign? She's the real lady with talent. Gaga is basically just a PRODUCT for the gay community to latch onto. She she probably just says she's bi and a hermaphrodite etc so more gay people buy her records. It's sick. Gay people should be more aware of phonies- they don't realize how big of a cash cow the marketing gurus see them as. A whole group of people who generally don't have children who have a lot of disposable income that like to spend this extra on entertainment? Sounds like a demographic made in heaven. I for one am not hypnotized over it- sorry!

First of all, I don't really think that Lady Gaga has some underlying "occult" meaning to her music. Her "Bad Romance" video is very stylistically done and goes to show that she (or production team) is very smart in playing the game. Just because a song lyric is in first-person narrative, doesn't mean that it is exactly what the singer/writer wants, but may be means of being critical of a subject. Her imagery is very dark, however I think it has some truth to its "message" if you even want to call it that.

Next up, the majority of all singers, actors, celebrities are "attention whores" in that they get paid for people to listen to them. This is what that industry is all about, the more people that listen to you, the more you get paid. This is what our culture/society is about. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if she just sits back and kind of laughs at the circus that swarms around an image/a person once they hit the scene with as little effort as possible.

Last I have heard, the Gaga has denied being a hermaphrodite. It's interesting, a woman who is very outspoken and comes off as a very strong personality is rumored that she really is a man or bi-sexual. My partner was teaching a freshman intro class and one of his students made the remark that she thought Gaga was really a man. Isn't this what the media did to other outspoken women during any women's lib movement? Exaggerate any masculine feature they have to show that they are not "normal" or were freaks as means to discredit them?

As for this video, I am glad someone posted it. It is good to show that she at least has the "chops" for the music industry and makes me respect her a little more. I am sure she will remain a controversial figure for a very long time.

@ Josiej - Sorry? Your credibility please? Just want to make sure we musical proletariat scum know who we are listening to when it comes to getting a music education, as you suggested. Also...remind me when personal taste stopped mattering? More importantly, I hope you succeeded in giving yourself that personal morale boost you were looking for by scolding us on our *personal taste* - Judgementalism at its best.

@ anonymous - calling her sexually-based names is directly taking part in our "rotten society's" sex-obsession.

So, isn't it possible that the beauty of her constructed persona/s is that she can walk around in public, unnoticed, as herself because people expect Lady Gaga to have a zipper eye and be bleeding with mirrored bosoms?

So she's transformed her image - big deal! Madonna's been reinventing herself for decades... as have most rock and pop stars. You think she should just have been a demure little piano playing girl forever? People change! I'm sure when's 68 she'll be wearing a cardigan and walking the dogs - going to tear her a new one for the way she's changed then?

Don't get me wrong - I still don't like her! smilies/smiley.gif
