"I'm a feminist!" says Lady Gags

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, our favorite recent pop culture phenom, Lady Gaga, finally admitted to being a feminist, a term which she has rejected in the past. Speaking with music critic Ann Powers, Gaga said, ""I'm getting the sense that you're a little bit of a feminist, like I am, which is good. I find that men get away with saying a lot in this business, and that women get away with saying very little . . . In my opinion, women need and want someone to look up to that they feel have the full sense of who they are, and says, 'I'm great.' "

Of course, Ann Powers is more than a "bit of a feminist," as she's been tracing the trajectory of women in music since at least the 80s, but it sure is nice to hear Lady GG, who gave up one of our favorite quote this year (you'll see it in the Feb/March issue of BUST) own up to what's long been obvious to anyone who pays attention to how women represent themselves in the media. And if she didn't realize she was a feminist, her fans sure have. Like Madonna and so many empowered female pop culture icons before her, the Gags is beloved by women and gays. Straight men? Not so much.

And the content of her music proves the point even further. In discussing her latest song, "Dance in the Dark," LGG explains: "The record is about a girl who likes to have sex with the lights off, because she’s embarrassed about her body. She doesn’t want her man to see her naked. She will be free, and she will let her inner animal out, but only when the lights are out. She doesn’t feel free without the moon. These lyrics are a way for me to talk about how I believe women and some men feel innately insecure about themselves all the time. It’s not sometimes, it’s not in adolescence, it’s always"

And continues:

"Also, I’m working with Viva Glam on MAC AIDS Fund stuff and the more I learn about AIDS and HIV.... most of the new infections are in women my age, and in women ages 53 to 64, older women who haven’t had sex in a long time, and in a moment of passion are irresponsible and contract HIV, and women my age who think their boyfriend won’t love them if they speak up. Condoms aren’t female. They’re making female condoms, but right now it’s, “buy a Trojan” – it’s for men. So everything’s in a man’s power, and women are taught to be receivers… It’s just a very deluded way of looking at sex."

Okay Gaga! Welcome to the dark side!. Thanks for finally dropping  your Poker Face and revealing your true nature. We always knew you were playing for our etam, but so happy to see you finally admitting it too.

This makes me so happy. I never really felt toooo guilty for loving Gags, but now I have better justification for liking her than "she wears those awesome lobster claw shoes."

I knew it! I wrote about how I thought she was a feminist on my music blog a few weeks back. http://www.emilysvitalvinylrecords.wordpress.com . Her music totally is and I am glad she had the courage to admit it. It is hard thing to do! Go Gaga!

I don't understand why it's so hard to admit, or why women are shy about admitting, to being a feminist. I'm 22, and it took me some time to admit to it, but only because I was learning my definition of it. Now I proudly stand up with the ranks, raise my hand, and own up to being who I am. Can anyone explain to me why someone would find it hard to do this? It boggles my mind.

@ Amanda, probably for the same reasons you say you found it hard to admit you're a feminist. I find that women of my generation (I guess you might fall into that category too) have to un-learn a lot of what they think feminism is about before they can actually learn about it and identify with it. So it's difficult because it's a longer process: we have to see past all the bad press, antagonism and fear that we see surrounding the F word, and then re-educate ourselves. It's difficult, it's a lot of work, and it can be very very confusing to unlearn and reeducate yourself. That's what I see happening with women my age.

Whaddya mean "...the Gags is beloved by women and gays. Straight men? Not so much." ?? Straight men in my circles LOVE her and not because of all the T&A. They think she's smart and brilliant in her ability to know and capture an audience and make it work for her. As an older feminist I find this male bashing a bit passé.

hmm. she may be feminist, but she is also ethnocentric. I read an interview with her in an issue of Spot On in August and she came across as incredibly stupid and nationalistic. I was a fan before reading that.

Gaga sucks and when did BUST magazine start sucking too? Back in the day you guys used to inform me of cool underground interesting shit. Now it's just all mainstream crap like everyone else. Why don't I just go read People magazine? Or Marie Claire? Or Rolling Stone? I already get enough information about crappy mainstream music from every other source. What magazine do cool people read now because I guess it's not BUST. What's next, you're going to tell me to listen to Lily Allen? Oh wait, you already did that. Thanks mainstream media. Did Rupert Murdoch buy you or something? Tell him I said, "Hi and to go fuck himself." Thanks

Lady hoo ha, who cares. Our lives as feminists have little to do with how pop Icons align themselves. A feminist is any person, male or female, who believes in and fights for the equal rights of women and girls. Pay me the same wage for the same work. Provide me the same opportunity for education and advancement. Alla y'all wrapped up in tabloid muckraking are missing the point, and guess what - being robbed of a worthy life in the process. Respect

@LorraineArthur:
It is an extremely immature notion to believe that everything that becomes "mainstream" is bad, and even worse to believe that everything that is not "mainstream," as you say, is "cool." You are clearly not paying attention to the intelligent context of BUST and only the fact that it happens to be geared towards a particular pop star. I dare you to read any of the magazines you mentioned and tell me if the articles sound the same based on CONEXT alone. Maybe you should focus on the fact that these articles celebrate a social taboo instead of GaGa herself. Read between the lines, and in fact: just read the damn lines or other articles. Maybe you'll learn something.
"What magazine do cool people read now because I guess it's not BUST."
What are all the "cool people" reading, you ask? You clearly care only about your outward appearance and are not focusing on the bigger picture. So, by all means, go read what all the "cool people" are reading. And spare us your asinine remarks towards how much BUST "sucks."

In four days I will have a published article, (which I just presented at an academic conference) on the feminist symbolism in the music videos to Paparazzi and Bad Romance. Thank you Gaga for proving me right!
