Patti Smith is People Too!

Found this awesome video of Patti Smith on an episode of the late-70's/early-80's TV show "Kids are People Too," via Lesley's blog who found it on Kathleen's blog.

I love how Patti explains punk rock by saying that "Rock 'n roll's gettin' back in the hands of the people, it belongs to the kids again, not the big business guys" and the host just kind of mumbles in response, "We can go for that, I think..." Also, what kind of a kid wants to be a missionary when they grow up? And OMG, those lame-o wings hair cuts and the neutral colored cowl neck sweaters? Yup, I rocked that back in the day. Eep!

The version of "You Light Up My Life" that she sings here completely rocks, but as awesome as Patti is, I think that if I'd seen this as a little kid, she would have terrified me.

When I did see her as a kid, she did terrify me. I remember seeing her on Saturday Night Live thinking-- is that a man? But now I don't know how my life would be without her! Weird. Thanks for posting this.

I love her so much. I was in 9th grade in 1979, and I must have bought Wave or Easter as my first PSG album, she was an instant fave on my record player. You guys should read her new book, its amazing. Going to see her speak tomorrow night at the NYPL, yeah!!
