Stayfree or Stay Away?

Oh, Canada! We love that the ad world  is finally realizing that, yup, women have a sense of humor too. And with the Old Spice ads they surely have a winner. This Canadian Stayfree ad, which I'm sure it's creators hope will be a major viral video, is a virus, alright, but more like an STD. Aside from the fact that a dude is lecturing me on what kind of maxi pad to use, what kind of hot date busts out with the phrase "I hate moisture! Don't you just hate moisture?" A serial killer kind, that's who!  Worst of all, there isn't just one of these ads, there are loads! and they are epic FAIL!

See guys, this is what happens when you forget to invite Peggy to the brainstorming meeting!

Oh. My. God. Those are SO CREEPY! They start kind of funny, but CREEPY! I really don't need a guy THAT into maxi pads. *Shudder*

Oh God, I barely made it through the first one. I don't want to watch the rest. Nice eye candy but sooo....uncomfortable.

I thought they were kind of uncomfortable yet hilarious. Better than the same old white-pants-prancing-on-a-beach-and-funny-blue-liquid ads.
I can't find a reason to take them so seriously.

What the f*^%?! Are you sure this isn't a Saturday Night Live sketch? It never ceases to baffle me why it's so difficult for marketers to speak to women in a manner that resonates with us. Maybe...if they had women conceive and direct these ads they'd get it right. I'd rather pick lint out of my belly button than have a date with any of these creepos. Ick.

This is frickin' skeevy! I couldn't finish the first one, either. UGH. I DO think, however, the U by Kotex commercials are HILARIOUS.

Seems like a ripoff of the hilarious Brawny paper towel campaign from a few years ago. Minus the funny.

Stayfree, what were you thinking? Since when does our culture encourage guys to be knowledgeable about mestruation? It's creepy, tacky AND unconvincing.

Even though the Old Spice campaign is entertaining, it's not moving the product, sales are not improving. Are there actually any young women out there who want their men to smell like Old Spice? And are there tons of young women out there using maxi pads? Somehow I doubt it.

These products are in their last desperate death throes...

I'd rather be on my period for a whole month than have to watch another second of those AWFUL, UNCOMFORTABLE, CRAMP INDUCING commercials. (P.S. I bet "Trevor" doesn't like how moist women get in the bedroom either...)

OMG. I just watched all three, and they are hilarious. I don't like pads, and I don't even like men, but I LOVE these ads!!! I can't stop laughing!!!

Tura Lura, I hope pads are NOT in their death throws. I don't like tampons. Never have, never will. I think there are enough young women out there that choose pads for them to do just fine on their bottom line.

Whoever came up with this read the "Porn for Women" book, cause it's almost a complete lift. Even the art direction is the same. I am NOT offended. In fact, I'm turned on. Who doesn't like his accent, eh?

I don't think Stayfree really intends to encourage or convince us that the average man can be terribly knowledgable about menstruation...come on, people, it's supposed to represent a goofy fantasy involving hot sex objects who truly care about women's problems! Goofy, indeed! Those of you calling it creepy, icky, etc. make me think you haven't gotten over the (IMO) adolescent perspective that menstruation itself is creepy & icky. @Madge: I think the variety of reactions proves not all (even feminist) women perceive advertising messages in the same way.

This discussion pretty much illustrates why 90% of comedy writers are men.

The 10% of women out there who're actually funny get it.
The punchline? If you don't get it, you probably blog at bust.com.

Sorry for the double-post. But I wanted to say that the awkwardness - at least for me - is derived from his apparent zeal to dive into the topic of menstruation with a thinly-veiled disgust of "unmanagable moisture control". And where I would've gained insight about these products from trial and error, he's gone out of his way to stage demonstrations about which pad is superior. From my perspective, this doesn't show enlightenment on his part. It seems as though he's already trying to assert control over my bodyparts by telling me which pad I should be using. I know this is just a commercial and it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. But this is kinda creepy. smilies/tongue.gif

The Canadians should have hired Dave Foley from the Kids in the Hall. After all, he has a good attitude about menstruation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cot8-WEZxOM

It's just a badly written ad, featuring bad actors, directed badly. I'm not offended that they talk about pads, more offended at the bad production and thought process behind the whole thing.

I'd prefer to see these men jumping around on a beach wearing white pants.

Years ago, in the era of the hugely successful "Modess...Because" campaign, a bunch of ad men were feeling bored, and one of them suggested a new campaign for tampons: "Tampax...Insofaras". Of course, they all agreed it was far too tasteless to ever even hint at to the maker of Tampax.

Since then, we've been subjected to Tampax ads that featured a young woman who just happened to bring along a full box of Tampax when her boyfriend took her out in a leaky rowboat, and she plugged the hole in the boat with a tampon.

And now, we've been subjected to these ads.

Frankly, I'd prefer it if they tried the "Insofaras" concept. At least all those elegant models in haute couture gowns and lavish settings would be a hell of a lot classier than these ads.

I thought they were funny. I don't think whoever came up with the idea wanted it to be taken seriously, it feels like an over the top unrealistic view of what women want on purpose in order to mock how women and their interests are portrayed in other pad commercials to me.

wow, people are really hating on these ads! I personally find them hilarious. Probably because I realize it's satire and understand that everything that seems "offensive" was deliberately emphasized for the sake of it. Don't know what satire is (which, obviously many commenters don't...)? That's where Dictionary.com comes in: the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

So lighten up, and realize that these advertisers are actually on YOUR side! Plus, kudos for those sexy men for doing such a ridiculous ad!
