Fear of the "F" Word

Posted by: Intern Courtney in Feminizzle |

Recently, I came across a Forbes article that caught my eye. In “Who’s Afraid of Post-Feminism? What It Means To Be A Feminist Today,” Jenna Goudreau asks women to weigh in on some hard-hitting questions: what is feminism, and is it relevant today? Feminism, the other "f word," has come to represent unwarranted stereotypes for some, and is a badge of honor for others. If some are uncomfortable calling themselves feminists, ... Read More

I Need to See a Lady Doctor

Posted by: Samantha Vincenty in Boob Tube |

Helen Mirren has thrown her hat in the ring to become the twelfth Time Lord in the Doctor Who series, and I would really love to see this happen. I started watching Doctor Who this year, and its Buffyesque “Big Bad of the Week” formula sucked me in almost immediately. So far I’ve only seen the 10th and 11th Doctors’ seasons, and both David Tennant and Matt Smith were fantastic. But who’s to say that when the ... Read More

I learned three things recently, and all from reading one article:       1) It is possible to swallow an entire pen, by accident, without causing yourself serious harm. 2) Pens sometimes do not show up on x-rays (despite the fact that they are PENS). 3) A pen that has been hanging out in your stomach for 25 years is still capable of writing. It’s gross, it’s weird, and it’s 100 percent true. A ... Read More

I’ve always had a thing for Gidget and groovy beach-party movies: those ’60s classics in which Frankie and Annette try to make each other jealous, only to kiss and make up at the big luau. As the temperatures begin to drop, we could all use some sunny jams to remind us that summer is coming. Normally I’d just play "Misirlou" over and over, but luckily for me (and my neighbors), Susan SurfTone’s new album, Shore, is ... Read More

La Sera performing at the Bowery Ballroom in March. Photo credit: Bao Nguyen. No matter how you look at it, 2011 was the Year of the Woman, music-wise. It was a year ruled by Adele and Florence & the Machine and Lady Gaga, by Rihanna and Nicki Minaj and even Britney Spears. (I feel like I’m time-traveling back to become my 13-year-old self by saying this, but I actually really like Britney’s new music, okay?) And those are ... Read More

There's just something about Lisbeth Salander, the brilliant hacker who's the central character in Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy. Although the author never lived to see his books in print, he might have been amazed at how the world has become obsessed with his rather unique protagonist. Lisbeth is a genius, quite possibly on the autism spectrum, bisexual, heavily body modded, and defiantly self-reliant. She takes swift and brutal ... Read More

Oh man, I miss the Cramps! Thanks to an intrepid tweeter over at @thingsfromhere, I was reminded that way back in 2004 we ran a little piece in BUST where we asked the Cramps' Lux Interior and Poison Ivy to make us a Christmas Mix tape. They called it Black Christmas, natch. It's full of early Rock n Roll gems like Christmas in jail, by the Youngsters, and Don't believe in Christmas by the Sonics. Here is a link to it, with the MP3s - ... Read More

Hunger Games fans rejoice! Effie (who'll be played by Elizabeth Banks in the upcoming film adaptation) is now the face of China Glaze’s new line of nail prods, "Capitol Colours." In the ad, Banks-as-Effie is styled in futuristic awesomeness with nutty lashes, violet hair, and the cutest heart-shaped lipstick. China Glaze offers fans twelve new shades, from a drab gray to the sparkliest orange I've ever seen. The browns are also ... Read More

This holiday's BUST Magazine Craftacular and Food Fair was a smashing success, drawing crowds of excited shoppers and crafters to 82Mercer for the season's most comprehensive collection of handmade gifts. Though the craftacular is over, there’s plenty of DIY holiday cheer leftover for our raffle winner! NYU student Kelly Feng is the lucky gal who received a bunch of awesome, adorable goodies so graciously donated by our sponsors and ... Read More

DIY Colored-Pencil Jewelry

Posted by: Intern Courtney in Crafty |

Gabrielle Biar, the triple-threat designer, mother, and blogger has debuted some outstanding colored-pencil jewelry. Her latest creations were featured on Lost At E Minor: a webzine that features "inspiring art, design, music, photography, and pop culture."  These vibrant back-to-school themed pieces are awesome, but the best part is that Biar provides a step-by-step guide on her blog, Design Mom. There, you can find exactly ... Read More
