Intern Caroline

I know Toddlers & Tiaras is messed up. I know! It goes against so many of my core beliefs as a feminist. I shouldn't feed into a society that gussies up children in layers and layers of makeup, spray tans, and false teeth. Not to mention the problematic revealing costumes and way-too-mature dance routines. But every once in a while, I have to watch, because hot damn those kids say the darndest things about pizza and cats. And I don't care what anybody says: there's nothing wrong with a 25-year-old woman sourcing child beauty-pageant queens for poses to use in bar photo booths. Every so often, there's a girl featured on the show who forces my jaw to drop in sheer, giddy delight rather than abject horror. I want to introduce y'all to Alana, hands-down the best thing to ever come out of TLC's controversial show and the brains behind every other phrase that will be coming out of my mouth this week.

Alana is magical, sassy, and confident. She doesn't need any coddling--she knows she rocked her Daisy Dukes. To her, the beauty part is boring and pageants are all about making that paper, an attitude that is refreshing and and unnerving all at once. Her favorite part of the whole process (other than the "monaaaaay" she hopes to win) is that magic moment when she gets to show the judges her belly. At one point she points to her stomach saying, "Look at this big thing. They don't know a good thing when they see it!" Preach, sister! I'm going to turn to Alana's wisdom anytime I overindulge and have a food baby hanging out over my jeans.

It wouldn't be an episode of Toddlers & Tiaras without a few moments of questionable parenting. At one point, Alana's mom is seen feeding her "go-go juice" which makes Alana go-go completely bonkers moments later.  It appears to be Mountain Dew, a beverage that not only peps up our precocious beauty queen but also turns a mouse to goo in 15 months! Alana's mother is convinced the brew is her daughter's key to success, explaining it works heaps better than the bag of pixie sticks she used to pour down her throat. Alana agrees, stating that go-go juice makes her feel, "laughy and playey" and like she wants to pull her mom's hair.

In the end Alana doesn't win, but I think she has so much ahead of her that this small bump in the road doesn't matter. At the very least, she has given us at BUST the gift of honey boo boo child, a term of endearment I hope we never stop using.

VH1's Best Week Ever created a master supercut of all Alana's best moments, or you can check the video below for the full extent of Alana's glory.

Oh Honey Boo Boo Child I watch, too, and I am a devout feminist and have been since 10. But damn there is something about that show...what IS it? I watch NO reality TV. None. Except the girls. Is it being appalled by the mothers? The "flips?" Seeing these poor children melt down? I don't know. but I do know I agree with you and have anointed Honey Boo Boo Child and her Buddha Belly my personal heroine. Alana, my you never lose that "you-ness." We're all Alana at 4, before they wring it out of us. Long live Alana!

Is this for real? Seriously? This show is ridiculous and anti-everything I thought BUST stood for. Why don't you start writing articles about how awesome Jersey Shore is?

Wait, Bust is happy that this 4-year old girl wants to win monaaaay by showing off her body? 4-year olds "rockin" Daisy Dukes? WTF Bust? That show is the grossest thing on TV and the people who make it, the people who are on it, and the people who WATCH it should be ashamed.

I'm just confused.

I don't care for the show, but this little girl is amazing! that she loves her belly and thinks her body is amazing! (in a nonsexual way in a child beauty pageant, wow). I get she's all gussied up in makeup and daisy dukes that her mother or parents put her in, but she is focused on how awesome she is and it's not because she has pretty hair, pretty lips, etc but loves something you would think she would be ashamed of in the beauty pageant world, her belly. I hope her attitude can transcend the teenage years and beyond when she learns being waif thin is beauty and having a belly (gasp) is not. BTW, I hate the term "food baby" that the OP used. That is so sick and twisted. How can you use a term like that then turn around and say how you hope this little innocent girl can help you accept your "food baby" next time you over eat. yuck. This little girl should be about accepting yourself and your awesomeness whether or not you have felt you have over-eaten that day.

This may be from a god awful show, but I've never seen the problem with it in the little girls. It's all about the mother's imposing their self-esteem issues on their daughter while creating their ideal image of beauty and inevitably setting them up for a lifetime of being a brat. The girls are just along for the ride and clearly Alana's not taking it seriously. She's 4 for shits sake. Wanting "monaaaay" is probably something her mother has joked about, and all kids do at that age is mimic and have fun. It's just a persona that I see this little gem growing out of. She has a fantastic personality that I hope she focuses on developing instead of focusing on pageants. I wish my inner child was as funny and comfortable with her big ol' belly as Alana is.
