Trans Tumblr Calls Out Cis People

Posted by: Amy Zimmerman in General |

"Dear Cis People" is making waves with its bold mission statement and arresting messages. The tumblr, which is controlled (and minimally edited) by a trans woman named Amy, describes itself as "a place for trans people to send an anonymous message to the cis population as a whole," as well as  "a means of opening a communication line from people who are often silenced, either inadvertently or otherwise." Challenging a culture of ... Read More

While Steubenville showed the world the dark undercurrent of social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, it's not the first recorded case of cyber bullying, and it certainly won't be the last. In fact, Internet victim bullying and hateful twitter campaigns seem to be the new normal, as evidenced by the sexual assault case currently unfolding in Torrington, Connecticut. The case surrounds two 18-year-old football players ... Read More

Are you sick of talking about Jon Hamm’s penis yet? Me neither, but we should probably take a sec to discuss Amanda Bynes’ vagina. Last Friday, Bynes stepped up her girl-gone-wild game, announcing to the twitterverse “I want Drake to murder my vagina.” Since then the Internet’s been bugging out, trying to dissect the former child star’s actions and figure out what the hell is going on. Was the tweet a cry ... Read More

On October 9th, Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani teenager, activist, and blogger, was shot by a Taliban gunman. The militant group claimed that she promoted “western thinking” through her public opposition to the Taliban’s efforts to bar girls from attending school. Malala, who was treated in the U.K. and has recently started school in England, is now penning a book. I Am Malala will chronicle Malala’s fifteen years of ... Read More

While we might be down on Mississippi's abysmal sex ed programs, those Mississippians sure know how to raise a squirrel. We think this Youtube video's title, "!!SQUIRREL ADOPTED BY CAT LEARNS TO PURR!!" really says it all (we didn't add the exclamations or the all caps, but we thoroughly approve of them). TGIF, y'all.    Image via ... Read More

Anti-Choice March Madness

Posted by: Amy Zimmerman in Feminizzle |

Every year, college basketball enthusiasts go batshit for March Madness. The president fills out a bracket, ESPN pulls out all the stops, and fans stock up on tons of face paint. This year, Mother Jones is offering it's own take on the phenomenon by debuting its own "Anti-Choice March Madness: The Worst State for Women." Think fewer chicken wings and painted abs, more shocking information about the current legislative war on women, ... Read More

In case the occasional Poetry in Motion subway poster isn’t really doing it for you art-wise, MTA Arts for Transit is officially upping its game. From March 25th to 31st, the MTA will be partnering with Creative Time to present “HEARD•NY”, a groundbreaking installation by artist Nick Cave. The show will consist of a herd (get it?!) of 30 Soundsuits that resemble colorful, shaggy horses. The suits will be installed in ... Read More

Rape culture has been all over the news lately due the horrific Steubenville rape case and subsequent trial. However, rape culture has far-reaching effects across age demographics and nationalities, as proven by Australian radio host John Laws. Laws, who Salon calls “Australia’s answer to Rush Limbaugh,” has been called out for a radio interview with a victim of sexual abuse this week in which he displayed a penchant for ... Read More

Yesterday, the Arizona House of Representatives attempted to vote on an appalling anti-transgender bill. The measure would require people to use the public restrooms associated with the sex on their birth certificate or serve up to six months in jail. Representative John Kavanagh, who proposed the bill, is reacting to an anti-discrimination ban that was passed in Phoenix only last month. According to Kavanagh, that ban might “act as a ...   Hillary Clinton’s been pretty much perfect since High School. So it’s no surprise that Clinton’s using her free time to advocate on behalf of LGBTQ rights and marriage equality. While any other recently retired Secretary of State might have peaced out on an awesome vacation or taken a really long nap, Hillary recorded this video for the Human Rights Campaign instead. In the video, she cites a phrase she used during ... Read More
