How To Get The ‘Ironic Stevie Nicks’ Look: BUST Fashion Nation

Tell us about this look.
I’m a dancer, so I wear a lot of leotards—I think this one’s from Target. The jeans are from American Apparel, the leather vest is from a thrift store in the East Village, and I ordered the boots online. This very cool lady from Philly makes a lot of rock ’n’ roll-inspired jewelry, and this necklace was based off original Black Sabbath merchandise from the ’70s. The hat is actually not my favorite black hat, but I left that one at my boyfriend’s house.

When did you become interested in fashion?
I used to go to the video store every Friday with my mom to pick out movies for the weekend, and when I was maybe four years old, I saw a life-sized cardboard cutout of Elvira. I thought she was the most beautiful person I’d ever seen, and I declared right there, much to my mother’s chagrin, that I wanted to be like her when I grew up. So I’ve been kind of chasing that Elvira vibe ever since.

How would you describe your personal style?
A friend once described it as “Ironic Stevie Nicks,” which cracked me up, though Stevie is genuinely one of my fashion icons. I wear a lot of black, but it’s really textures that I’m into—I love velvet, leather, lace, and anything with fringe. I also have a bit of a punk/metal aesthetic that still finds its way into my wardrobe, mostly in the form of black band T-shirts that I’ve cut into crop tops or denim vests covered in band patches.

What is your favorite piece of clothing?
I have a black mohair cropped cape that I rarely get to wear because it’s almost never seasonally appropriate.

What advice would you give to girls developing their own personal style?
Do research; there’s a lot more out there to wear or be inspired by than what you might see in stores, and there are many people with stories that are as interesting as their clothes.
