Bye bye, Sweet Tater!

This recession hasn't deemed fair to many of our beloved boutiques; keeping their heads above water to be true to their dreams and their following, only to be held down by these ugly times. Not cute. It's the sweet, quaint shops that flood our senses with endless walls of creative one-of-a-kinds and vintage finds that lift our spirits when we walk away with something special.

Speaking of a boutique as such, Sweet Tater in NYC will be closing shop on April 19th. If you haven't been or heard of them, you should check out their site and closing sale for your last chance to purchase a piece from talented taters Christina Komilakis and Sarah Gregory.

What used to be an abandoned laundromat in NoLita, Sweet Tater (AKA 'the tatershop') has been catering to customers since 2004 with vintage finds from the 1950s to 80s. They began their in-house label of the same name in 2005 to recreate their favorite vintage inspirations, right out of their Mulberry St. boutique. Their fanbase includes celebs such as Sofia Coppola, Karolina Kurkova, Kirsten Dunst and Liv Tyler.

I LOVE the way their Mediterranean-inspired tunics and shirtdresses of different fabrics can be worn with our without a belt or sash. And if you decide to wear a belt, why not tie on one of their leather wrap belts, which comes in an array of colors? Of their super-universal styles, the 'Men's Suiting Shirtdress' falls short of manly; the deep V-neck plunge is sexy and decidedly feminine, giving just enough 'V' for the option of a bare neck or piling on several necklaces to showcase some girly bling.

I also love the description that follows the 'Men's Suiting Bib dress' on the ST site as an inspiration to the design: 'We had to wear those silly lobster bibs at a wedding this spring and, surprisingly, found ourselves sort of cute.' To add to the cuteness are their shoes and boots, among other vintage accessories. Hopefully we're just saying 'TTFN' to the ST crew. Once the recession is over, I'm crossing my fingers to find more Sweet Tater designs, perhaps reincarnated into another kind of spud.

Sale begins tomorrow, April 7:
All vintage items from $5-$40
Sweet Tater collection pieces $20-$50
Hugging it out with your favorite taters one last time - priceless
