Our week of hot, sunny sunshine just got a little bit brighter. Cat Power’s Chan Marshall recently released an official announcement for her upcoming album Sun with a new track that’s got us tapping our toes on the hot sidewalk cement. “Ruin” may be Marshall’s brightest song yet, driven by an uplifting piano melody and pulsating, rhythmic drumbeat. The song is accompanied by lady Cat Power’s soothing voice, which is as beautiful as ever. Marshall’s recording process for the album--which involved performing and producing everything herself in various locations, including a hand built studio in Malibu-- is reflected in the song as she sings a list of different places she’s visited around the world.
Both rejuvenating and energized, “Ruin” sets the tone for a promising new release by Cat Power—her first full-length album of original material since 2006’s The Greatest. We only have to wait a little bit longer, now; Sun will be out on Matador, September 4th. To hold you over until then, check out Marshall’s album announcement video, below, and grab the new track for free right here!
