Taking a book club and turning it into an all-girl, reading-inspired, song-fest? What will they think of next? Once I peeped these deets below on nonsense nyc , I was hooked (though it would be cool if they added some women writers to the mix in 2009, doncha think?):
Unparalleled songwriting nerdery. Local songwriters Phoebe Kreutz, Chloe Matheou, Liv Carrow, and Susan Hwang perform songs inspired by, and based on, Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions. Book-themed food and drink are served, and audience members are encouraged to give in to any Vonnegut-inspired impassioned outbursts.
The Bushwick Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at Goodbye Blue Monday to rejoice in book-inspired music from the most talented songwriters in the area. February: Raymond Carver’s What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. March: Edwin Abbott’s Flatland.

A while back, I posted about the weird youtube/FOC mashup phenom of people (mostly ladies) videotaping themselves lip-sychning to various Flight of the Conchords songs. Well, seems like the Conchs themselves have gotten wind of this weirdness, and so now HBO is running a Flight of the Conchords Lip Synch contest on their site , in order to promote the new season.
They’ve already posted a few entries; I’m not sure if these are real or faked as examples for further submissions, but anyway, they are fun to watch, and make me so excited for the new season I could almost scream.
Times is hard. Fun is not. If you’re in NYC Monday night, pack up your sins and unburden yourself at ‘Gutless and Guilty’ , a night of music and comedy happening at Santos Party House!
The night will include:
Bread and Puppet Theater’s production of ‘Dirt Cheap Opera’, a bawdy, 45 minute adaptation of the famous Brecht/Weill ‘Three Penny Opera’ - a story of the gangster Mac the Knife and his brand new wife Polly newly mixed and freshly rebaked.
Then music by:
Lily and the Baby - Americana country from the 20’s to 50’s with a humorous twist; May Lane - Country never looked so good while making you blush in your beer; Chainsaw Trio - A fusion of punk, blues and country that’s downright dirty; Five Points Band -Rock with spooky Americana undertones;
And special guest star Cherie Lily - electronic music with kickboxing, she will get us pumped to dance the rest of the night away!
The night will also include home made brownies, pulled pork bbq from Brooklyn Laundry, and DJs till 4 a.m.!
We’re not very ‘listy’ over here at BUST Magazine, but this year I figured we’d do a little round up of our top album releases for the year. Here are some of my favorites, as well as our Associate Music editor’s, the lovely Sara Graham.
1. Duffy Rockferry
2. Estelle Shine
4. The Kills Midnight Boom
5. Dungen 4
6. Adron Adron
7. Black Keys Attack and Release
8. Child Ballads Cheekbone Hollows EP
9. Atlas Sound Let the blind lead those who can see but cannot feel
10. Joan as Police Woman To Survive
*One fake out that would have been in my list, was Missy Elliots album, I got to hear it but the label never put it out! What is up with labels never putting out their rap artists? (Same thing happened to Eve, it just never was released.)
Sara’s list:
1. MGMT Oracular Spectacular
2. Radiohead In Rainbows
3. Cut Copy In Ghost Colors
4. White Denim Exposion
5. Of Montreal Skeletal Lamping
6. Wolf Parade At Mount Zoomer
7. Chairlift Does You Inspire You
8. Kings of Leon Only By the Night
9. Blitzen Trapper Furr
10. Magnetic Fields Distortion
A while back you may remember Tara and I gushing about the Akron/Family show we stumbled upon at SXSW. Since then, we’ve developed a full blown love affair with this band which is why we were SO excited to hear that these boys are gearing up for a new record, (coming out on Dead Oceans) and 2009 tour!
The band will be playing a short run of December dates, culminating with a New Year’s Eve performance, (with Deer Tick!), for what promises to be an all out lose-your-mind celebration of music and good times. The NYE show will also be the very last show to take place at the Knitting Factory New York before it relocates to the new space in Brooklyn. You won’t want to miss this band! Their performances are epic and I easily consider them one of my all time favorite bands to see live. Get acquainted with them here. And don’t forget to bring your maracas, bongos, or whichever percussion instruments you may have, you’ll be needing them.
Tour Dates:
Dec. 28 Boston, MA; TT the Bears
Dec. 29 Burlington, VT; Higher Ground
Dec. 31 New York, NY; The Knitting Factory
As much as the Holidays can sometimes suck for grown ups (the rushing, the shopping, and the hassles) I really do love Christmas, and here are at least three excellent things I can recommend to get you thru any stress and strain you may be feeling.
1. A John Waters Christmas CD , including number one hits like Santa Claus is a Black Man , Merry Christmas Baby Jesus, and Fat Daddy. This cd gets heavy rotation in the BUST offices and has been a favorite for 4 years.
2. I know we blog about John Roberts like, once a week, but I cannot get enough of his Tree video. Pure genius. This never fails to crack me up. I’m gonna go look at my tree rignt now.
3. William S. Burroughs ‘A Junkies Christmas.’ They play the audio version of this on WFMU every year, and it’s become a tradition to listen to it while I’m baking or cooking in the kitchen.
Honorable mentions: A Charlie Brown Christmas, all the Rankin and Bass shows. Merry Christmas everyone!
Artistic Director Philip Glass has assembled an eclectic line-up of modern day music icons Patti Smith, Vampire Weekend, the National and more to rock it out at the 19th Annual Tibet House Benefit Concert, at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in February.
Tibet House, a non-profit organization is dedicated to promoting and maintaining Tibetan culture on behalf on his Holiness, the Dalai Lama by serving as both a cultural center in New York City and worldwide online resource for individuals interested in Tibetan culture.
Some bands are worth the wait. Some shows leave you glowing, sweaty, tired, footsore, but with a stupid grin on your face that lasts for hours.
Some shows remind you why you love rock’n'roll.
Boss Hog’s reunion was everything teenage me would’ve wanted, and everything that makes grownup, cynical me let down my defenses and bliss out on the music. And on the pure heat between Cristina Martinez and Jon Spencer, easily the sexiest couple in rock. (Photo by Gabi Porter/Prefix)
Judging by last night’s show at Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Music Hall, of Montreal have totally made it. Seeing them a few times over the years, their fan base always seemed loyal but obscure to me. Last night it seemed their popularity was almost cult-like. I mean, 16-year-old boys were in drag to celebrate the art queer vibe of their newest album! It was nuts!
Deliciously androgynous frontman, Kevin Barnes took it all the way and back again with costume changes of diva proportions (I lost count at six), each time tossing off his stage gear into the hungry crowd until he was in some gold undies that left nothing to the imagination. Hot. To add to the glam spectacle, count dancing ninjas, simulated sex with fruit, projected, animated album art and body paint. The band was clearly bigger than the venue (Barnes has been known to ride a white horse onstage, not unfortunately not last night), but that made it all the more intimate. Sonic highlights included the current single ‘Id Engager’, a disco version of ‘Bunny Ain’t No Kind of Rider’, and exuberant closer, ‘A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger’.
They continue their US tour supporting newest avant-pop release, Skeletal Lamping. You can catch a peek of the live show when they are on Letterman tonight. I’m hoping for some extra fruity goodness for Dave.
