The story of Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o and his fake girlfriend might very well be the most shocking, absorbing, and tragicomic sports story of our generation (or at least of this news cycle). If you happen to live under a rock, or are allergic to Deadspin, here’s the down and dirty: Te’o became a tragic media darling in September, when it was reported that his beloved grandmother and his girlfriend, Stanford graduate Lennay Kekua, had both died within a timespan of six hours. Lennay and Manti’s story, one of love at first sight and endless phone conversations, was catalogued by multiple respected publications including Sports Illustrated and ESPN. And then, on January 16th, sports blog Deadspin broke the news that it had all been a hoax. There was no death certificate for Lennay Kekua, she had never enrolled in Stanford University, and she certainly never graduated. Because she never existed.

The story is still in progress: Te’o released a statement admitting that he had unwittingly fallen in love with a virtual woman. He claimed that, “We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.” If Te’o is telling the truth, then he’s been the victim of a particularly cruel and embarrassing prank. However, evidence such as the fact that last October Te’o told a Sports Illustrated reporter that Kekua was at his last game (despite his recent statement that the two never actually met) implies that Te’o might have been complicit in the immaculate conception and subsequent demise of Lennay Kekua. Whether Te’o is a hapless victim or a media mastermind is yet to be determined. But I think that we can all agree that this Cosmopolitan “Hot New Sex Position: the Manti Te’o” is a hilarious reprieve from all the revelations, accusations, and questions that have surrounded this story since it broke.
