Apparently, this is NOT what a feminist looks like
Oh, Shailene, Shailene, Shailene. We need to talk. The internet is mad at you for saying you're not a feminist in your interview with Time magazine , and we're pretty disappointed, too. I mean, c'mon Shailene. You are smarter than this. You are a thoughtful person. We chose you for the cover of BUST because we wanted to know more about the soon-to-be-a-star hippy girl who was going to play the lead role ... Read More

These high-def photos of women from almost 100 years ago will raise some questions. Like: How did they did their hair like that??
Ever wonder what women of the past used to dress like, act like, and think like? Well, while photos can only really answer the first part of that, I just stumbled across a buttload of amazing, high resolution images, and I have become obsessed. These photos have so much detail, so much information, spend enough time looking at ... Read More

Back in the day, all men were referred to as Mr. (as in Mr. Burns), and women were either Mrs. (as in Mrs. Robinson) or Miss (Miss Hannigan), depending on whether they were married or not. Actually, if you were a Mrs., you were really supposed to be addressed with either your husband's full name (as in "Mrs. James Franco") or just his last name ("Mrs. Franco") rather than your actual full name (Mrs. Michelle Obama would have been a no-no). Miss ... Read More

"I think it's shameful," group co-chair Amy Wassernam states in a recent press release concerning the action. "Our generation fought long and hard to convince society to stop calling full-grown women 'girls,' but this younger ... Read More

First the good news: Lily Allen just released a new song that is most likely the most hard-hitting feminist anthem to come out since Helen Reddy's "I am woman, hear me roar."
Now the bad, bad, very bad news: In the video for the song, Lily is seen dancing, fully clothed, among a gaggle of very thin, very underdressed twerking women of color.
See, the video starts out pretty okay. Lily is on the operating table getting fat sucked out of her ... Read More

Recently, NYC subway stops and bus shelters have been plastered with the faces of little girls in all their smiling glory. Printed over the image of each girl is the headline "I'm a Girl" and then, smaller, "I'm Beautiful the Way I am."
In between those lines are listed the various ways that the girl is "beautiful": "I'm a leader, adventurous, outgoing, sporty, unique, smart and strong," for instance.
Are you feeling the warm-fuzzies ... Read More

Last year, when the farmer's market was looking sad with nothing but kale and onions and potatoes, I bought a sugar pumpkin, just 'cause it looked so cute. When I got it home I wasn't quite sure what I'd do with it. Unlike Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins, which really aren't the most delicious for cooking and eating, sugar pumpkins are much smaller, more round than squat, and they have flesh that is firmer, and less stringy and watery, than their larger sisters.
That ... Read More
