OMG it FINALLY feels like springtime here in N.Y.C.! Yesssss! That means I’ve officially retired my parka for the season, have resumed stealing my boyfriend’s hoodie as outerwear, and am now salivating over salads instead of the soups and stews that got me through the colder months.
Truth be told, I wasn’t always a salad person. I was one of those vegetarians who basically lived on different iterations of starch and ...

Hummus is a pretty big deal here at BUST HQ. In an office full of varied tastes and dietary restrictions, a tasty chickpea dip is always a featured crowd pleaser at all our birthday celebrations and intern-last-day parties. And if our crowded staff fridge is any indication, a few of us are definitely toting in samples of Sabra and tubs of Trader Joe’s at least twice a week.
As easy as it is to buy, however, northing beats the flavor ...

As a percussionist, I've been obsessed with Tom Tom, the only magazine in the world dedicated to female drummers, since it started rocking my world back in 2010. It's got some killer content, ranging from interviews with inspiring musicians to recipes from the road. But one constant that makes every issue super extra special is the beautiful portraiture supplied by Tom Tom's head photographer, Bex Wade. In the following interview, ...

There’s been a lot of water-cooler chat at BUST HQ these days about chia seeds. I first got hooked on ‘em when I started slurping them down in my favorite bottled kombucha drink. But once I began reading about how great they are for detoxifying the body, and how awesomely nutritious they are—they’ve got more omega-3s than salmon! Plus decent amounts of calcium, protein, fiber, and potassium!—I wanted to work ...

Every once in a while, a cookbook will make its way into BUST HQ that makes me go, Holy Shit! I need to make something in here IMMEDIATELY! This was definitely the case when I got a look at The Lotus and the Artichoke, a gorgeous new recipe compendium by Justin P. Moore.
An amalgam of Moore’s three main passions: travel, photography, and vegan cooking, Lotus dazzles with over 100 exotic recipes culled from time spent in over 40 ...

Vegetarian meat is a divisive issue. It gets crap from omnivores because it doesn’t taste like “the real thing,” and purists in the veggie camp often claim to be grossed out by the concept of soy masquerading as animal flesh. But for many compassionate cooks, vegan versions of burgers, chicken, and even seafood are lifesavers when the hankering for comfort food rears its hungry head – especially in ...

When I attended the inaugural session of Willie Mae Ladies Rock Camp back in 2006, the experience literally changed my life. Over the course of three days, I played the drums for the very first time, collaborated on my first song, performed for a live audience, and formed an all-girl band that went on to record and play the N.Y.C. club circuit for the next three years.
In the time since then, hundreds of other women have had similar ...

Here in N.Y.C., the winter chill has come down hard on us this week, as if to rub it in everyone’s faces that the warm, toasty holidays are over and it’s time to face our frigid commutes again. When plunging wind-chills make me feel like my strength is being sapped, it’s tempting to turn to tea or soup as a pick-me-up. But this year, I discovered that a perfectly-chilled glass of green juice in the morning before I head ...

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for The Amazing Kreskin, the world’s greatest mentalist. I remember first being mystified by his mind-reading tricks during one of his 61 appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in the ’70s. And when I discovered earlier this year that Hulu had made multiple episodes of his ’70s Canadian TV show The Amazing World of Kreskin available online, I devoured all the ...
