Dear BUST blog readers who either live in Paris or are currently visiting: I am extremely envious of you! As if I needed another reason to dream about flying over to the lovely land of France, I just read on one of my favorite go-to art blogs, BOOOOOOOM, about an incredible gallery opening. Sure, New York is nice and well, but it’s gloomy and rainy today and the idea of walking along cobblestone roads with some fresh bread in hand on my way to an art show doesn’t sound all that bad. Opening tonight at 6 pm and running through June 25th is Greetings, featuring a collection of new work from Kyle Field, Nathaniel Russell, and past BUST cover girl Alia Shawkat. Curated by photographer Danielle Rubi, the show contains, according to the Brachfeld Gallery in Paris where the work is being displayed, pieces which “…explore the literal and abstracted meanings of a greeting: the first words from an unknown being, a message from a foreign land, a signal from the afterlife, a connection of the individual with the infinite, a personal plea to the universe, or a presence emerging from the dark.” Dealing with equally elusive and familiar concepts, the gallery explains the theme more simply: “a greeting is the turning point between the unknown and the known.”

Although some pieces were brought from their homes, much of the work for Greetings was created while the trio spent a few weeks in a medieval village in Burgundy leading up to the show. Since I can’t make it to Paris any time soon, I was thrilled to learn that Danielle Rubi followed the three artists as they worked and hung out, taking photos and videos along the way, which she has been posting on the gallery show’s tumblr. It contains glimpses into each individual’s creative process, as well as sneak previews of the show, flower field frolicking, and Alia cuddling kittens (!). Kyle, Nathaniel, and Alia will also all be performing together during the opening, which promises to be extra special. Alia has recently been performing jazz standards in NY and LA and Kyle Field and Nathaniel Russel have been playing and recording music for quite some time—Kyle as Little Wings and Nathaniel as Birds of America. Have fun all you lucky ducks who can go; I’ll be sitting here with my fingers and toes crossed that Danielle updates the tumblr with tons of photos and videos following the opening!
