When the fabulous Guerrilla Girls were asked to create a poster commemorating the 20th anniversary of the disturbing l’École Polytechnique massacre aka Montreal massacre - a gunman entered a university, separated the male and female students, and proceeded to shoot only the women in the name of "fighting feminism" - they immediately said yes. Their posters, which focus on the injustices women face in the art world and beyond, always manage to ... Read More

I am not a fan of guns, have never had one in my hands (the thought of firing one frightens me), and I think the idea that someone (with enough money) can readily purchase one from a trade show without a completed background check is absolutely ridiculous. Even though I have a heated dislike for firearms, this website makes me chuckle.Glam Guns, a mock site showcasing rifles and amo glammed up with our favorite childhood figures, ... Read More

(Intern Amber Bela Muse checked out Amanda Palmer on Saturday, November 14th, in Brooklyn. She asked me to post her review of the marvelous show while she's a busy bee traveling to and fro. Enjoy!)
Last Saturday night, in front of the Music Hall of Williamsburg, I stood waiting in a long line to get tickets to see Amanda Palmer. It was cold, rainy and my mood was beginning to sour. When I finally got inside I bee-lined for the bar to get a drink. To my ... Read More

Crafty-cool website Cut Out + Keep hit the 30,000 member benchmark today, which is quite the feat. The website, which started out as a personal craft blog for journalist Cat Morley, has expended into a craft mecca, with oh so many craft and other DIY (beauty and food recipes, etc) tutorials posted by members.
While browsing the website earlier, I found tutorials for a Spiderman Bento Box, a Strawberry Cheeze Cupcake, and a charming Envelope Bag with many possible ... Read More

Gemma Correll, your work is adorable. I thoroughly enjoy taking a peek at recaps of your days, checking out illustrations of what you wore on a given day (thank you for the product descriptions), and reading your endless remarks about pugs. Like you, I want one oh so badly and cannot wait for the day I can play with its curly-q tail.
Oh goodness, if you've never seen Correll's work, check out her flickr page, personal website, or even her etsy shop, where her 'Pugs ... Read More

Last spring a screening of Handmade Nation made its way to Portland, OR, where I was living at the time. Because I was a little slow on the up-take, the screening at the Museum of Contemporary Craft sold the hell out and I was left a little bummed. Now how was I going to catch this documentary on the DIY craft movement that has made its way into every corner of America?!
Well well, just in time for the holidays is the release of Handmade Nation on DVD (yay!). For ... Read More

My Roald Dahl-loving heart sure got a treat this weekend and boy, it was satisfying.
Normally, movies intended for children and their parents really don't get me too hopped up at all. Up looked extremely cute but eh, I still haven't seen it. Where the Wild Things Are has the extremely well crafted puppets, stunning scenery, etc. but that still wasn't enough to get me counting down the days until its release. Fantastic Mr. Fox, on the other hand, has ... Read More

According to Time, the Mormon Church has finally announced support for gay rights legislation, which, I think a number of people can agree, is (somewhat of) a skip in the right direction. Because of this endorsement, officials in Salt Lake City, where 80% of the lawmakers and governors are members of the Church, unanimously approved two ordinances banning the firing of someone from their job, as well as evicting someone from their residence, because of their sexual ... In a recent interview, Demi Moore talked about her upcoming birthday (she'll be 47 tomorrow), the lack of well-written movie roles that come her way, and her hatred of the term "cougar," which she has become the poster-woman for ever since she started seeing the sixteen-years-younger Ashton Kutcher.
Why, she asks, is she singled out for her relationship to a younger man when she has obviously not been the first famous woman to do this? And why the use of the ... Read More
