We were saddened to hear of the passing of the wonderful Zelda Kaplan today, at the age of 95. Zelda has been a fixture on the nightlife scene in New York for years, and was beloved by anyone that ever saw her in her brightly colored African print outfits and large dark sunglasses. Beth Höeckel, a 33 year old Baltimore native, makes beautiful and dreamy art. Her collages will simply blow your mind. They are creepy and sometimes sad, weird and nostalgic. Höeckel uses vintage magazine images (often of women) and places them in space age moonscapes, or against ominous skies, often with their backs to us, gazing at the freaky landscapes she creates. I got very lucky and scored a ticket to see Björk’s BIOPHILIA live show last night at the Hall of Science out in Queens, and I’m so glad I made the trip. The snow is falling here again, and the Sundance Film Festival is still plowing through the town of Park City. I’ve been to 21 films so far and the main theme that I’ve noticed is the overwhelming presence of strong female leads and women directors.  One of the hottest films here is Beasts of the Southern Wild, a truly original film that takes place in the swamps of Louisiana, and stars a six year old girl named Quvanzhand Wallis.
