Class Actress? Class Act

Posted by: Lisa in Music Stuff | Comment (4)

Any band that cites Madonna’s first album as a major influence is gonna get a listen from me. And in the case of the forthcoming EP from Class Actress (it hits ears Feb. 9), another and another and another. After totally falling for the Brooklyn trio’s throwback synthiness and lead singer Elizabeth Harper, who has a voice like buttah, I had to check them out at the Highline Ballroom last night, where they opened for Au Revoir ... More! Gift Guide!

Picking things for the holiday gift guide is one of my favorite duties when it comes to working on the Dec/Jan issue. It's so fun to window shop on the Internet and see all the awesome goodies that everyone puts together. Inevitably, I find way more cool stuff than fits on one page, so here are a few extras in case you need some additional gift-giving inspiration (for friends, family, or, of course, yourself!). First up, this Letter Bag ... Read More

We've been fans of Rachel Trachtenburg since she was but a wee lass, bangin' the drums for her family's band, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. So it's a little hard to believe that she's turning 16. What's not hard to believe though, is how many awesome people will be helping her celebrate on December 13th at the House of Yes in Brooklyn! With performances by Murray Hill, Care Bears on Fire, and Rachel's new band SUPERCUTE, this is ... Read More

She's got the look

I really love Tamera Ferro's style. If she seems familiar to you, that's cause we feature this fashionable San Franciscan in the Looks section of our current issue (click through for a peek), and her "Audrey Hepburn-meets-black forest-meets-gypsies" vibe is the dope show. My favorite part of her amazing outfit is definitely the handmade topper so you can imagine my gasp of excitement when I realized that she made it herself and actually ... Read More

Holiday Tunage

Bear with me while I dork out for a second. I love Christmas music. I do, I can’t help it. I think it started with my cherished New Kids on the Block, Merry Merry Christmas cassette (featuring Donnie Wahlberg’s seminal tune Funky, Funky Xmas), and these days come December 1st I’ve got A John Waters Christmas on repeat. So you can bet I was down to see The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza at the ... Read More

  1. Bread Winners

In a crappy economy, eating lunch out or ordering it in goes from daily habit to budgetbreaking luxury. But bringing a PB-and-J to work every day is a total downer. Why not brown-bag in style with these delectable sandwich ideas?

  2. Dyer Straights

Did you dirty up the toes of your white hose? Give your old tights new life with a DIY dye job. All you need are white tights (no more than 50 percent polyester), rubber bands, fabric dye (we used RIT), an old, large pot (you won’t want to use it for cooking again), and old tongs or a wire hanger.

  3. Call Of Duty

The school talent show is coming up yet again, and for the first time in years, no one in my family will be participating. Inky graduated last year. And Milo considered enlisting a fellow third-grader to help him reenact a scene from the Rankin/Bass excremental 1977 version of The Hobbit before ultimately deciding to skip this production. Hallelujah! His lack of interest is my ticket out! After half a decade on the volunteer adult crew that keeps this annual turkey from running off the rails, I feel more than ready to retire. Let some camera-wielding slacker who thinks she can get away with sitting in the front row, documenting her own child’s wonderfulness, step up to the plate.
