On Thursday, a Kansas judge ruled that Scott Roeder, the man who shot and killed Wichita, Kansas abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, will spend life in prison. Roeder will be eligible for parole in 2060.

Dr. Tiller was a long-time target within the anti-choice camp: he was one of the few abortion providers who would perform late-term abortions. He had already endured one attack, having been shot in both arms in 1993. He was killed on May 30th, 2009 in the foyer of a church as he handed out church bulletins.

I think President Obama put it best in his statement from the day of Tiller’s murder: “I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.”

While it’s not much of a comfort, it’s good to know that justice has, to the best of its ability, been served.
