Leave it up to longtime running children’s program Sesame Street to tell it like it is. On an upcoming episode of the show, a new muppet will make their way onto Sesame Street. On October 9th Lily will make her debut as part of a a special episode about hunger in America that features country star Brad Paisley. “ Food insecurity is a growing and difficult issue for adults to discuss, much less children,” said Paisley about the episode.
Sesame Street has never been the type of children’s show that shied away from the tough issues. After the 1983 death of Will Lee, who played Mr. Hooper on the series, producers took the opportunity to teach children about death. On the show Mr.Hooper dies and the neighborhood gang has the tough, but necessary task of explaining death to Big Bird.
In 2002 the South African version of the show added Kami, an HIV positive muppet to the character roster.
By definition food insecurity is lack of access to consistent food. According to the USDA, 14.5 percent of U.S. households were food insecure within the last year. Additionally, 5.4 percent of households experienced extreme food insecurity.
As America continues to ride the waves of the recession, it only makes sense to clue kids in on what’s happening around them. Characters like Lily will only help to expand our children’s often limited viewpoint on the world. Kudos to Sesame Street for educating our children and giving it to them straight.
