I love Florence + The Machine. BUST loves Florence, too; she was on the cover of our Jun/Jul 2011 “Women Who Rock” issue. Actually, at this point in her career it is safe to say that everyone loves Florence + the Machine. “Shake it Out,” the first single off her latest album Ceremonials, has 10 million-plus views on YouTube-- if you're not one of the 10 million who have seen it, watch it now:
Great, right?
It’s like the song of my life right now, since I have a case of the early twenties that I need to shake out. It’s my pick-me-up track when yo' girl is feeling down.
But you know what’s almost better than the original “Shake it Out”? “Shake it Out”: the remix. I am usually not a big fan of remixes. I figure that if the artist thought the song would sound better another way, they would have released it as such. I also think that remixes tend to be terrible anyway.
This one is a beautiful exception. Florence hooked up with Canadian R&B producer/singer/writer/enigma The Weeknd to add even more soul and dub to the track. It's almost as if The Weeknd puts you in the dark and Florence’s voice is that force of light telling you and I to shake off the devil or whatever else may be on our backs, impeding our dancing.
