Well this is awesome - two students from Cornell University have created a mannequin modeled after real plus sized bodies, building the most accurate curvy shape the fashion industry has ever used. That sounds a little strange (why would an accurate plus-size mannequin be revolutionary?) but until now, most mannequins for larger clothes were made by just magnifying the general proportions of smaller mannequins. That means the proportions of ... Read More

Rebel Wilson is one cool chica who’s come a long way from her days playing Toula in Australian TV show Pizza (look it up on YouTube. If you’re not Australian you will be super confused and most probably scared). In fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Wilson is releasing her own line of T-Shirts. Named after her popular Pitch Perfect character, the Fat Mandi collection currently consists of just two shirts. The garments ... Read More

Here in New York, the first signs of fall manifest in our wardrobes. Temperatures have dropped out of "sweat torture" territory, and cardigans are creeping out of our closets as things cool down. The pinnacle of cool, though, has got to be the World Maker Faire; on September 29 and 30, the grounds around the New York Hall of Science in Queens will transform into the world's largest DIY festival. You are cordially invited to join us at the ... Read More

A few months back, we put out a call for submissions, asking fashion bloggers to send shots of themselves in the outfits they thought they'd be wearing and loving come fall. We received so many amazing entries that it was tough to pick our favorites, but we showed off some fantastic ladies in our August/September issue. We didn't have enough room to include all the details of these great getups, but have no fear: you can find out everything ... Read More

I've been pretty obsessed with '90s fashion lately; and so, I decided to go straight to the source for some inspiration. The TV shows and movies from my childhood and tween years are a treasure trove of rad lady characters with killer style, and even though I definitely didn't think I'd be revisiting shows I used to watch on Nickelodeon for my current style, I've come to terms with the fact that inspiration comes from the most unlikely of ... In Overdressed, New York-based writer Elizabeth Cline explores the extreme decline in the cost of fashion, and the political, economic, and social implications of this change. Cline begins with a personal yet familiar anecdote: she once bought seven pairs of $7 shoes in a single haul, only to eventually throw half of them out without having worn them once. Most of us who grew up in the ’90s practice Cline’s former shopping ... Read More

There’s a certain kind of gratification that comes along with purchasing a vintage or handmade item, whether it’s because you know you’re reducing your carbon footprint, or you feel assured that you can stroll the streets of Manhattan without exchanging an awkward, unexpected moment with a stranger of “Are we wearing the exact same thing?” Whatever the reason, GreenBeing, one of the vendors setting up shop at ... What's your Slavery Footprint?

I consider myself a conscious consumer. I like to know where the things I buy are made so I don't feel any guilt when I slip on that dress or use that new mascara. But just because these things weren't made in Taiwanese sweatshops doesn't mean they're entirely guilt-free. There's still the question of where the sum of the parts were made. Where did the minerals ... Read More

Indie Designer of the Day: Afia

Posted by: Lisa in Style File |

There’s something about summer that just makes me want to shop, and right now I’m way into this adorable collection from Brooklyn-based designer Meghan Sebold’s label Afia. The pieces are totally cute and colorful—prints and pleats galore!—but it gets even better. The fabric is sustainedly sourced in West Africa and the line’s handsewn at a women’s co-op in Ghana, providing fair wages to ... Read More

One of our favorite BUST-y ladies, New York graffiti artist-turned-fashion designer Claw Money is teaming up with Vans for a sweet mini-collection of some sneaks, a tank and some socks. The main theme, as you can see to the left, is a pattern of her notorious claw symbol and some lovely leopard print fading from aqua into coral. Prices range from $8 for the socks to $70 for the hi-top sneakers with the allover print. According to Claw ... Read More
