Attention all alley cats and Go-Go's fans! The 5th Annual Bowling for Boobies is happening next Tuesday in Universal City, CA and Philadelphia, PA, and though the bowling teams are now full, you can still pop in and cheer on teams like the Bon Temps Bombshells and Livin' on a Spare. Bowling for Boobies is a fund-raising event dedicated to providing assistance to local women who are dealing with financial difficulties as a result of ... Read More

Brooklyn Indie Market

Are you ready to get your Amelia Earhart on? Put away those Ray Ban aviators and get some authentic aviator goggles? Then, lace up your Victorian boots. Time to trim beards or take on corsets. This Saturday, October 24th, Brooklyn Indie Market presents Steampunk II . For one day, Carroll Gardens won't belong to Moms with strollers. The only handlebars will be carefully groomed mustaches. From 11-7 PM, the neighborhood will be a ... Read More

The Artificial Virginity Hymen Kit has been causing a legit uproar in Egypt.  What's in the phony purity pack?  Why, a diaphragm that trickles a blood-like liquid, of course!  And it's all in an effort to trick new hubbies into thinking their brides are carrying a V-card. The kit is seen as a tool of empowerment to some, but Egyptian conservatives believe it promotes promiscuity and ultimately threatens Islam.  Members ... Read More

''She's majoring in Fat Studies'' might sound like a cruel frat boy heckle, but the field of study really does exist--and an increasing number of identity scholars are out to prove that size does matter.  Have you ever stopped to wonder why Ursula, the evil sea-witch from the Little Mermaid, is characterized as larger-than-life?  Professor Julia McCrossin (pictured left) has.  She's researching the impact of literary ... Going Co-ed Under The Sea

Posted by: Libby Zay in General | Comment (2)

When a Washington Post article about the possibility of women being allowed to serve on submarines popped into my newsfeed this morning, it was kind of a no-brainer that misogynistic reader comments would abound.  Still, I wasn't expecting one commenter to suggest women ''were sterilized'' before taking the plunge, or that another would recommend a plumber for all the tampons that block up the pipes on the seafarer.  Do people ... Stories

  1. Puttin’ on the Blitz!

When the Yeah Yeah Yeahs first started making noise in N.Y.C. back in 2000, it was hard to tell how awesome the band really was. Early reports made the new art-punk trio with the showstopping singer sound very exciting, but there was some skepticism—perhaps the group was just experiencing run-off hype in the wake of the then-exploding Strokes phenomenon (indeed, one of the Strokes wore a YYYs button when they played on Saturday Night Live).

  2. The Unusuals

Every gal needs a go-to vibe, and once you’ve found the one, why change it up? How about because even a sure thing can get dull after a while? This fresh crop of unique vibes offers new ways to get off, so I decided to see which ones were worth getting down with.

  3. Call Of Duty

The school talent show is coming up yet again, and for the first time in years, no one in my family will be participating. Inky graduated last year. And Milo considered enlisting a fellow third-grader to help him reenact a scene from the Rankin/Bass excremental 1977 version of The Hobbit before ultimately deciding to skip this production. Hallelujah! His lack of interest is my ticket out! After half a decade on the volunteer adult crew that keeps this annual turkey from running off the rails, I feel more than ready to retire. Let some camera-wielding slacker who thinks she can get away with sitting in the front row, documenting her own child’s wonderfulness, step up to the plate.
