Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer Doc Examines Behind the Scenes Chaos

HBO has really stepped up their game. Their documentaries are no exception to this. They seem to be resurrecting an art-from that had been pushed to the side in favor of instant internet journalism. We can safely say that, with the premier of Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, HBO has revived the documentary.

The film, directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin, shows some never-before-seen footage of the trial and events leading up to that performance in 2012. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria “Masha” Alyokhina and Yekaterina “Katia” Samutsevich remain imprisoned and are serving their two year sentences for "hooliganism."

Two of the women of Pussy Riot were able to escape Russia and come to the US. They are here on a covert tour of NYC to promote the documentary and to speak out in support for their imprisoned sisters. They have taken off their signature balaclavas, but have elected to go by code-names and avoid discussing any specific details that might endanger their case.

Tune into HBO tonight at 9 pm to see the doc.
