A Staten Island ART HAPPENING (or Be-in) Gathering: Boomer & X-Y-Z, North-South-East & West, Black & White & Red & Green, Hippies, Hipsters & Beyond MUSICIANS, VISUAL ARTISTS, POETS, DANCERS, ACTORS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, PERFORMERS, FILM MAKERS, COMEDIANS, FOLK ARTISTS, FACE/BODY PAINTERS, FOOD & GAMES With spectacular beachfront views of New York Harbor and the Verrazano-Narrows set as background, the Alice Austen House Museum’s lush, six-acre meadow will host SIcoLab’s Bridge The Gap art happening (or Be-In) on September 20. From 11am to 8pm, artists and art-lovers of all ages, disciplines, backgrounds, and geographic locations are invited to attend and participate in the day’s collaborative creation. The idea is to Bridge The Gap between: • The generations of Staten Island artists with an understanding that there is a mutual benefit – the youth need elder experience and elders need youthful energy. • Black and white – a coming together of Stapleton Heights and the Waterfront scenes • North and South Shores – breaking down stereotypes • Staten Island with New York and the world – a counter-cultural yell in the wilderness. Participants can bring anything from a chair or blanket to tents and tables. Artists, artists groups, cultural organizations, vending folk artists, clubs, bands, groups of friends, and etc., are encouraged to set up a camp or installation. The more creative, specific, and involving the better. We will bridge the gap by creating a hyper-real community. When the gate opens at 11 a.m., participants will be able to grab land. The more people in your group, the more tents and installations you have, the more space you can get. Visual artists interested in showing completed works can contact Mike Shane at 347-733-2270 or mikeshanephoto@gmail.com for more information. A professional stage with PA and simple backline will be available for bands, singers, poets, dancers, or any other acts who wish to perform and contribute to the vibe. Performers must sign up for a time slot, in person, the day of the event – THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. It will be first-come, first-served in hour long blocks. Performers will get at least eight to ten minutes. The stage will be active from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Films from local filmmakers will be shown from 7 to 8p.m. Local restaurants, caterers, and food vendors are encouraged to set up a tent and sell lunches and non-alcoholic refreshments. Potential food vendors should contact Geoff Celis at 347-432-0136 or geoff.celis@gmail.com for more information. There are no vending fees for the event, but SIcoLab asks vendors to provide the art group with a fair donation by day’s end. Folk art/merchandise vendors should contact Laura Bruij-Williams at 917-939-9607 or laurabruij@gmail.com for more information.
