Sexual Congress Molly Crabapple Launches Large Scale Animal Orgy in the Museum of Sex (New York, NY)- With only a monthly left before Election '08, the political fires are burning, the debates have begun, and controversy is widespread around the country. On October 15th, Molly Crabapple joins the fray as the Museum of Sex Unveils Crabapple's newest large-scale painting, "Politics." In the American tradition of political cartooning, "Politics" depicts politicians as debauched animals, driven by overwhelming urges. Building on the famous elephant and donkey symbols of the Republican and Democratic parties popularized by cartoonist Thomas Nast in Harper's Weekly in 1874, Crabapple transforms our standard political iconography into a subversive circus. Crabapple flexes her first amendment rights as she satirizes the powerful, painting those political animals engaging each other in a variety of compromising positions. There is more to Politics than initially meets the eye. "My work is like Where's Waldo gone bad" explains Crabapple. "Swarms of detail let you hide all sorts of wicked and revealing things. Kind of like earmarks in a Senate Bill." Viewers are encouraged to examine the painting closely to explore both the blatant displays and coded nuances in the piece. ABOUT THE EVENT In line with its mission to support an open discourse and dialogue, the museum of sex encourages patrons to join in the debate on Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 from 8:00pm to 10:30pm as the Museum hosts a politically charged, after hours event. Not only will Crabapple's "Politics" be revealed, but the Museum's film gallery will be turned live to the 2nd Official 2008 Presidential debate, allowing patrons to watch the debate in a public space and more fully explore the intersection of sex and politics. It will be a night of both celebration and conversation. Especially with gender playing such a large theme at this year's election, there are many poignant issues to be discussed. Proclaimed by the New York Times as "a downtown phenomenon", Molly Crabapple is an award winning, internationally acclaimed artist and the founder of the increasingly popular Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, the world's largest chain of alternative life drawing classes. "Politics" by Molly Crabapple will be on view at the Museum of Sex from October 15, 2008 through November 5th. The Debate Night event will be held at the Museum on Wednesday, October 15th, from 8:00pm to 10:30 am. The event is free of charge and open to the general public. The Museum of Sex is located on 233 5th Avnenue in New York City. CONTACT: The Museum of Sex 212.689.6337 ext 113 pressoffice@museumofsex.com
