Dragontown Corsets Presents: The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival March 27-28, 2010, Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania
Burlesque has finally come home to roost at one of America's oldest operating Vaudeville theaters! On March 27 and 28, 2010, Dragontown Corsets will host the First Annual Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival, which is a weekend-long gathering of performers, pastie enthusiasts, and spectators whom will converge on gorgeous, historic downtown Jim Thorpe, PA for classes, lectures, dance workshops, and the Burlesque Bazaar. The highlight of the JTBF will be The Big Reveal; a Saturday evening Burlesque show and competition at the 1881 Mauch Chunk Opera House. The Big Reveal will feature some of Burlesque's most seasoned performers, as well as numbers by up-and-coming entertainers. The best performer, as evaluated by our panel of guest judges, will receive the Crystal Corset award, as well as a cash prize of $500.00.
The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival's "Big Reveal" is slated to include an eye-popping array of locally and nationally recognized burlesque performers. The roster includes Jacqueline Hyde of Seattle's "Tempest Burlesque," Eva Valentine of San Francisco, Bella Sin of "Le Femme Mystique Burlesque," and Philadelphia's own "Peek-A-Boo Revue," who were awarded "Best Troupe" by the Miss Exotic World Convention of 2008. Adding to the excitement is a variety of Neo-Vaudeville acts, including sword and fire swallower Riley Schillaci, bellydancer Morgana Perezada, and "The Human Floor," who will attempt to break his own Guinness World Record by allowing 3,000 pounds to be placed upon his body.
The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival stands to be one of Eastern Pennsylvania's most anticipated events of the year. But more importantly, it has been designed as a fundraiser. Ticket sales raise much needed funds for the restoration and ongoing preservation of the Mauch Chunk Opera House; a landmark theater that was a regular stop on the Vaudeville circuit. It has held performances by Al Jolson, The Dorsey Brothers, Eddie Foy, and the immortal Mae West. Funds raised will contribute greatly to its return as the crowing jewel of a town that remains true to its Victorian era architecture.
The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival is now accepting applications for performers and vendors, and is actively seeking event volunteers as well as instructors of all-things-burlesque! Visit us at http://www.jimthorpeburlesque.com to see what all the excitement is about!
