About Constance McMillen Constance McMillen is an 18 year-old lesbian teenager from Fulton, Mississippi who made national headlines recently when her high school chose to cancel its prom rather than let Constance attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. Then, when the school was ordered to put on another event for the students, the parent body actively worked to exclude Constance and several other students, including several learning disabled students, from the festivities. A lawsuit filed by the ACLU is currently in the courts on Constance's behalf. Constance has been openly "out" as lesbian since middle school and has been the target of much malicious, hate-filled and threatening behavior. We applaud Constance's decision to press ahead with a lawsuit that places blame squarely on the heads of the adults responsible for her well-being. About the ACLU/LGBT Project The ACLU has advocated on behalf of LGBT people for over 70 years and in 1986 founded the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender AIDS Project, a division of the national American Civil Liberties Union Foundation. The Project's staff consists of experts in constitutional law and civil rights, specializing in sexual orientation, gender identity and HIV/AIDS. The ACLU's nationwide network of affiliates allows the Project to work for fairness and equality at the local, state and federal levels, affecting change in the courts and legislatures, as well as in the court of public opinion. As part of the broad civil liberties mission of the ACLU, the Project brings together the LGBT and HIV/AIDS communities with other social change movements to achieve a just society for all. Today, the ACLU brings more LGBT cases and advocacy initiatives than any other national civil rights organization. |
