“I can draw and write, and you’d be foolish not to hire me,” journalist Djuna Barnes told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1913. Those were bold words, especially since at the time she wasn’t even allowed to vote. But the newspaper hired her, kicking off a long and varied career that included everything from news stories to novels. This exhibition at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum in N.Y.C. features Barnes’ photographs, drawings, and news stories. Read the fine print at brooklynmuseum.org, and when you visit be sure to look for Barnes’ spot among other influential women in judy Chicago’s mixed-media art piece "The Dinner Party." |
