Swoon's Submerged Motherlands Exhibit Opens (Brooklyn Museum) (All Day)

Swoon creates a site-specific installation in the Brooklyn Museum's rotunda gallery, transforming it into a fantastic landscape centering on a monumental sculptural tree with a constructed environment at its base, including sculpted boats and rafts, figurative prints and drawings, and cut paper foliage.

Swoon engages with climate change in this installation as a response to the catastrophic Hurricane Sandy that struck the Atlantic Coast in 2012, and Doggerland, a landmass that once connected Great Britain and Europe and that was destroyed by a tsunami 8,000 years ago.

Emergency Actions To Defend Abortion Rights & Stop The War On Women (NYC) (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM)

Abortion Rights Emergency!

Speakout & PROTEST

April 11 & 12

Abortion rights are in a state of emergency, and headed for disaster.  Already, women in this country who cannot access safe abortions are attempting to self-abort by inserting sharp objects in their vaginas, taking pills, asking their boyfriends to beat them up, and more. Others are being forced to bear children they do not want.  This is the future for women everywhere if this war on women is not massively resisted and defeated.

WE MUST ACT TO STOP THIS NOW!

Forcing women to have children against their will is a form of enslavement. Abortion On Demand and Without Apology.

Sat. April 12th  Protest!

2:00 pm: Assemble and orientation - NW corner of 49th St. & Fifth Ave. NYC

3:00 pm: Procession to St. Patrick's Cathedral

We will raise bloody coat-hangers* (representing the fate of women when abortion is illegal) and shackles (representing female enslavement). After an hour of silent protest, we will break the shackles and pledge to resist until we defeat and reverse these attacks and win Abortion On Demand and Without Apology and the full liberation of women.

This war on women will not go away on its own and will not be stopped by politicians or the courts.  We must take responsibility for resisting and defeating these attacks – the lives of women depend on what we do.

The Blood of Women is on Their Hands

Abortion on Demand & Without Apology!

GET INVOLVED: contact StopPatriarchy@gmail.com * StopPatriarchy.org

* Wire coat hangers were used by many women as an instrument to self-abort when abortion was illegal. 5,000+ women in the U.S. are estimated to have died every year from illegal, unsafe abortions before Roe v. Wade legalized abortions.

BROKECHELLA 2014 (LA) (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM)

Celebrating the best of what Los Angeles has to offer, BROKECHELLA  returns with its 4th edition in the heart of DTLA to once again serve all of those who don’t have the dough for a weekend in the desert. Don’t miss what the LA Times recognized as the community experience that skips “the mortal terror of your credit card statement” and “revels in staying at home.”

This year, BROKECHELLA will host festival mainstay and LA Weekly top live bands finalist, electronic folk duo yOya and fellow returning acts “bi-polar-folk”-blues group Kera & the Lesbians, and Echo Park garage pop fan favorite LA Font. Alongside eight acts new to the cARTel stage, these Los Angeles must-hears represent a variety of the city's most thriving musical movements. For 2014, we welcome a host of international acts via our brand-new World Initiative, including Swiss trash-pop iTunes chart topper ZIBBZ. The cARTel Stage will also host shoegaze pop/folk collective Hott MT, former opener for the Flaming Lips;  electronic trio drawing from  Chicago classic soul & experimental psychedelia Greenhorse; dark, dreamy female fronted rock band Dark Furs; ambitious surfer rock via Francisco The Man; glam-blues power pop rockers The Singles; harmony driven disco-synth dance group Vibes; and the rhythmic indie pop newcomers StaG.

BJORK: Biophilia Live At TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL (NYC) (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM)

From a mind unlike any other, Biophilia Live chronicles the multidimensional concert centered on the eighth studio album of avant-garde Icelandic artist, Björk. Directors Nick Fenton and Peter Strickland, unique voices in their own right, film Björk live in performance, and punctuate her music with evocative animation from apps created by the world's top 10 designers combined with science and nature archive and found footage. This is inspired by the themes of the album which explore the relationships between musical structures and natural phenomena—atomic, cellular and cosmic.  The infinitely creative journey presents a culmination of work that represents one of the most original musical endeavors of a generation.

Diane Keaton At The 92nd St YMCA (NYC) (8:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
“Is every day a bad hair day, Diane?” a friend once asked Diane Keaton. The Academy Award winner and bestselling author Diane Keaton takes a candid, hilarious and deeply affecting look at beauty, aging, that old frenemy the mirror and how, in the end, you just have to do it your own way. Keaton’s new book, Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty (Random House), comes out the day before our event. At 92Y, she shares funny – and not so funny – moments of trying always to stay true to herself.
