Solve For XX: A Celebration Of Women In Mathematics (NYC) ( 11:00 am )
Saturday, September 6, 11:00 am, includes pizza lunch
Meet three accomplished female mathematicians at this informal lunch and discussion session. Marjorie Senechal (Smith College and Editor in Chief of the Mathematical Intelligencer), Reidun Twarock (University of York, England), and Jean Taylor (NYU and Rutgers University) will be on hand to chat about recent revelations of geometry in nature. Hear how they've used math to study the shapes of viruses and foams, to investigate the internal structures of crystals and quasicrystals, and to understand why icosahedra are the stem cells of the solid state, and learn why these women think mathematics is the most exciting thing a person can do. If there's a young woman you know whose interest might be sparked, don't miss this opportunity to interact with some of the top female mathematicians around. Register at solve.momath.org.
The MoMath Solve for XX series will feature women who use math in their professional lives, and who will share their experiences studying and working in a field that has always been enriched by women, even if they're not always easy to spot in the histories! Through hands-on discussions and workshops, middle school and high school students form all over will get a unique chance to learn about the pioneers who blazed trails for others to follow, and to discover the opportunities that abound for women in mathematics. Addressing a need that is both timely and vital, this lecture series is of interest to all students, but is a must-see for all young women, no matter their level of interest in math — it has the potential to set the stage for a stellar future. V To Shining V ( All Day )
People all over the nation will be celebrating women and their awesomeness by throwing house parties, block parties, dance parties at bars and rallies at state capitals; to eat, drink and talk about the state of reproductive justice in their own states and how collectively they can get loud, go to the polls in November and toss out politicians who have decided the biggest problems in our home states is what women do with their vaginas!
In addition to all of the events that will be taking place across the U.S.A., Lady Parts Justice have teamed up with amazing musicians, comics and performers for huge V to Shining V blowouts. Each individual celebration will feature different entertainment portions, while also incorporating information about reproductive rights in each state. Performers include Sarah Silverman, Ted Leo, Cheetah Chrome, Sally Kohn, Holly Miranda, a very special performance by Lizz Winstead in her native Minnesota and more!
