Chelsea Knight's Currents At Saint Louis Art Museum (All Day)
This spring, the Museum's ongoing series devoted to contemporary art, Currents, features multi-media artist and current Freund Fellow Chelsea Knight, who investigates various concepts of labor, class, and gender through installation, video, and photography. In this exhibition, Knight creates the semblance of a construction site, a reference to the Museum itself as a place of physical labor with the ongoing expansion project. Knight's photographs of the East Building site will be presented alongside Frame (2012), a video featuring actual construction workers reciting feminist writings and poetry about desire, language, and labor.

Concurrently screening in the New Media Series gallery will be Knight's The End of All Resistance (2010), in which the artist transfers US Army interrogation techniques to a domestic setting. Knight examines the crucial role language plays in everyday life—how it shapes human relationships and affects our understanding, as well as misunderstanding, of others. Most significantly, Knight interrogates language itself, revealing its performative nature and role in the construction of power.

Curated by Tricia Y. Paik, assistant curator of modern and contemporary art, Currents 106: Chelsea Knight will be on view in Galleries 338 and 301 from April 6 through July 1, 2012. This presentation is supported by the Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Endowment Fund.

Mermaid Lagoon : 3rd Annual Benefit For Mama Ocean - NYC (9:00 PM - 11:00 PM)

Come away to Mermaid Lagoon, and an evening of performance, dance, revelry, and song as we dig deep to give back to our oceans. Mermaid Lagoon will increase ocean awareness and support through enchanting performance, interactive art, raffles, games, prizes, photobooth and internet contributions. All proceeds will be donated directly to the local Waterkeeper Alliance, and to ORCA Peru, a foundation that is currently assisting in the research of mass deaths of sea mammals in the South Pacific Ocean. This year the Lagoon mermaids have teamed up with Ocean Lifeline, and hope to bring a feminine, artistic edge to the plight of the world ocean and its creatures.  Join them as we remember our connection to the sea, and celebrate its enchantment, mystery, and beauty in a glowing lagoon full of dancing mermaids, ocean images, and bio-luminescent sea life. Performances by songstress Kai Altair, Coney Island's Best Mermaid Ali Luminescent, oceanographer/performance artist Dr. Mermaid, fire siren Cynthia Carvajal, and aerial and circus arts by Eric Schmalenberger, Kae Burke, Anya Sapozhnikova, Flambeaux, Lady C, Masae, Claire de Luxe, Bex Burton, Andriana Santiago, Christine Geiger, and more. Dance all night to underwater sounds of Justin Aubuchon in a nighttime lagoon of projections by VJ Masha, and bio-luminescent sea life by Greg Skolozdra.
