Women Of A New Tribe Exhibition ( All Day )

On 18 October 2013, the latest installation of internationally acclaimed traveling exhibition WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE will open at the Art Gallery in the John B. Coleman Library on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.  The exhibition which is a photographic study of the physical and spiritual beauty of black women has traveled widely around the country and twice to Europe since premiering in Charlotte, NC in June 2004.  The exhibition will open during Homecoming Weekend on 18 October 2013.  Opening receptions will take place Friday 18 October from 12:00 to 4:00 PM and Saturday 19 October from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The Prairie View edition of the exhibition will run through 30 November 2013.

In August of this year, photographer Jerry Taliaferro traveled to the campuses of the university to produce the images of over eighty subjects for the exhibit.  The subjects include students, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends of the university.  This particular edition of the exhibitions is unique in that all the images are of women with ties to the hosting community.   While the exhibit has been hosted by a number of colleges and universities,  Prairie View A&M University is the first HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities) to bring the WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE exhibit to its campus.

Pregnant Women And New Moms, Unite! (NYC) ( All Day )

Pregnant Women and New Moms, Unite! Oct 29, 11AM
Join NOW-NYC and the NY Women's Equality Coalition to call on lawmakers to  pass vital protections and rights for pregnant workers on Tuesday, October 29at 11 AM on the steps of City Hall in NYC.

This  week marks the 35th  anniversary of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.  Yet, pregnant workers  continue to be unfairly fired, demoted and their  health put at risk by  employers who do not provide temporary accommodations such as a stool to sit on or extra bathroom breaks.

A key provision of the Women Equality Agenda (WEA) would protect pregnant workers, but it has   stalled in the New York Legislature and nothing has become law. Tell your Assembly member and State Senator. Millions of women will lose if you don't pass live bills for women's equality by December 31.
