Oh dear, seems like there are still people in positions of the highest power and authority who believe women need to follow a doctrine of “obedience.” In his new memoir, Rep. Steve Pearce, a Republican from New Mexico, explained that he firmly stands by the unpopular belief that womankind’s duty is to “voluntarily submit” to her husband, who in turn “is to lovingly lead and sacrifice.”
He continues, explaining his view that men must provide authority and leadership in times of stress, while women are bound to obey. But don’t worry: he writes that the woman’s submission is a “self-imposed” expression of her “obedience to the Lord and of love for her husband.” Give me a break! He claims that the marriage he envisions is “is not a matter of superior versus inferior,” yet his weak defense sounds like the kind of separate but equal justification that does in fact perpetuate and rationalize systems of oppression. Women and men, in fact, cannot be equal when we impose restrictions on the freedoms and the potentials of any and all genders.
