Jillian Mercado, a 26 year-old New York fashion editor living with muscular dystrophy has been cast as one of the young and hip, culturally diverse models that are part of Dieselâs newest campaign âWe Are Connected.â
Although Mercado says that it was done as a joke, a few months ago she responded to a Diesel casting call looking for young culturally representative models. Not too long after, she was contacted by Diesel requesting more pics. And itâs totally understandable. Just one peek at her Instagram feed and you can see how much of a knockout she is just being her fun-loving, fashion blogger self.
Dieselâs artistic director, Nicola Formichetti, consciously featured her electric wheelchair in the photo that is being used in the advertisement. And he said, âItâs never easy for her to move from point A to point B, but sheâs totally fearless and has really been an inspiration to me. You donât have to be a conventional model type to represent a brand.â
With recent attempts by a number of brands to find ways to represent more realistic versions of their models, Diesel has definitely become one of the newest and maybe more successful companies to do so. âAnyone can wear Diesel,â Mercado said, âYou donât have to be a supermodel, you donât have to be a millionaire, you can wear it no matter who you are and what you look like.â
