Of all the free outdoor music events in NYC happening this summer, one of the best is the Americanafest NYC, celebrating American roots music, happening now at the beautiful Damrosch Park located at Lincoln Center. Wednesday night, the Godmother of Americana and alt country, Emmylou Harris and her long time musical collaborator of 40 years, Rodney Crowell, kicked off this awesome festival. They played a variety of material from country music standards, Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt covers, as well as some Emmylou and Rodney originals. Emmylou and co. definitely tore it up, ending with the audience rockin’ to their feet with a standing ovation.

The roots themed party continued last night with the fabulous Tift Merrit who delivered a twangy, kick ass set. There’s also symposiums and other Americana related exhibitions to attend. Check out the listing below for the full schedule of who else is playing at the concert series. Damrosch Park entrance is on West 62nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
