That's awesome. You should forward this to Caprice Crane ( @capricecrane on twitter) She's a TV writer/novelist and her mom was the original Ginger!! (Plus she's funny as hell!) - sarahdelaney

i think it's gilligan - there is a mathemnatical structure to the characters. GInger and Maryanne are teh good girl/bad girl, madonna/whore thing, which means they are about how women get power in this society.

the men area ll about different types of masculine power: the skipper is brute strength, the professor is brains, and thurston howell is money. Gilligan is show as having none of those three qualities, so he is the castrated/powerless male.

so, according to this analysis

roger sterling is thurston
don is the professor
giligan is definitley pete campbell
perhaps bert cooper is the skipper.

and of course, ginger is joan and peggy is marayann. there is no real role for betty draper, unless we want to say taht she's mrs. howell, as she derives her power from her husbands' money.

but now i arealize there are more shows that fit into this gilligan's islad structure, like sex and the city: carrie is gilligan, samantha is the skipper, thurston is charlotte , professor is miranda, ginger is mr. big and maryanne is aidan. - Debbie
