Yesterday at my part-time job, I was discussing with my manager my plans to start graduate school in January. When he asked me what I was going to study, I cheerfully replied that I was going to get my master's degree in Gender Studies. "What's that?" he asked.
"You know. Sort of like Women's Studies," I said, brilliantly describing my program of study.
"...What's that?" he asked again.
Dumbfounded, I ever so eloquently explained "Like...feminism and stuff?" (My ... Read More

PETA has released a new ad in response to the controversy surrounding TSA screenings, causing a rumble of its own by displaying (yet another) picture of a close-to-naked woman promoting their cause with her (thin) body. PETA's staff is not new to accusations of being sexist with their ads, and issued a thoughtful response last year to a reader of feministsforchoice.com explaining their motivations.
So, what do you think, readers? Is PETA promoting ... Read More

Not only have the holidays arrived, but the equally glittery awards-show season lurks just around the corner. Say goodbye to the classic comedian host, though, because word on the street's (meaning, of course, the internet) that Anne Hathaway and James Franco will be MCing instead. Both are potential 2010 Oscar nominees- James Franco for that movie where he has to cut off his own arm, and Hathaway for Love and Other Drugs, the movie which she promoted on this ... Read More

After the box-office failure of Disney's The Princess and the Frog, rumor was that Disney decided that fairy tales were a thing of the past; according to the LA Times, targeting only the little-girl market just wasn't enough. The studio's latest offering, Tangled, combines a take on a classic fairy-tale princess story with more modern elements, like CGI and wacky wise-cracking sidekicks, in order to attract a broader audience. And the movie did well on opening ... Read More

For several years, my BFF and I have vaguely planned to make a road-trip reality TV show, where we travel around in an RV and find deals at various thrift stores, antique malls, and shuttered local department stores filled with dead stock. Of course, we never really got that off the ground, and now the inevitable has happened: Alexa Chung stole our idea. According to the New York Times, "On Thrift America, scheduled to be broadcast on PBS next summer ... Chung ... Read More

The premiere of Bridalplasty surpassed my fears and expectations. The first episode introduced the twelve contestants who will compete for a chance to win their dream wedding and dream body, with plastic surgery. It all seems so misguided. It was disturbing to watch the plastic surgeon mar their bodies in consultation to the point where they looked like they were “part of a tribe.”
There were requisite sob stories. Bridalplasty is allegedly a ... Read More

Craftacular countdown: Just 4 days now! And in anticipation of the big day I’d like to introduce you to the House of Ismay! The crafty lady behind the House is Ms. Sarah Pounder, who works out of the spare room of her house in a village in Suffolk.
After studying Book Arts at university, Pounder found herself in an unrelated job, so she started selling her homemade wares at the markets on Brick Lane as something creative to do. Luckily she has been able to ... Read More

Goodwood, a New York-based jewelery and trinket line, features classic hip-hop style pendants (as well as whimsical pieces like this dapper little fellow) carved out of the decidedly non-bling medium of wood. Worn by such luminaries as Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Kanye's main squeeze (or are they broken up?) Amber Rose, and rising star Justin Bieber, these pieces could also make a great gift for a BFF/Secret Santa/lover. Stop by Coat of Arms on Black Friday for the ... Read More

Ahhh…Thanksgiving, the first link on the proverbial winter holiday chain of events. A time when biological families and selective families gather round to indulge in gluttony in it's most jovial form, and scroll down the list of people, places and things they are so grateful for. Personally, my turkey day traditions have gotten a little stale over the years. Seeing the same spread of green beans, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce ... Read More
