Apparently the NYPD have been all sorts of busy lately. Pals over at SUPERCHIEF have posted a video of a teenager being assaulted by an officer on a train platform after he allegedly evaded fare. In the video, the victim is being body slammed and pushed up against a wall by a cop taking his job a little too seriously.  In addition, The New York Times have posted a piece exposing tactics regarding search policies that pay no attention to ... Tonight, Brooklyn College will unveil "Fold, Staple, Share: Highlights from the Brooklyn College Zine Library." This exhibition will run through the fall semester and spotlights noteable pieces from the collection of zines, which will then become a permanent part of the library that the college is implementing. The collection will specialize in printed zines about Brooklyn, zines by the college’s alumni or zines about the art of self-publication itself. This ... Read More
Black Girl Dangerous, a blog for queer-identified women of color to showcase their artistic abilities, express themselves, educate one another, and weave a web of community, is an amazing step forward. Centered in activism, the blog encourages women of color to explore their wilder side through writing and creativity and to "shout it out!" The blog is a constant on my reading list and resonates body and sex positivity. The prose that is normally posted ... Read More
Hands up! You're under arrest for that killer 'do. In these series of vintage mug shots posted by Buzzfeed via Flickr user Least Wanted, I found unusual inspiration. Those beehives! That platinum dye job! That winged eyeliner! Not only are these photos suspiciously on-trend, they prove that, as MIA says, bad girls ultimately do it well. Pose and scowl, that ... Read More
You’ve heard of the amazing things going on in Russia. Right? You’ve heard of the protests in Red Square and surprise show at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. I know you’ve seen images of these fiercely brave women dawning balaclava head gear and outfitted in neon. Well at least I hope so. Russian all girl punk band Pussy Riot has made headlines over the past couple of months with the guerilla style activist work and the ... Read More
Grass Widow is perhaps one of my favorite new bands out there. Their form of girl rock evokes both nostalgic memories and daydreams of the future. The three piece all women set just released a new album entitled Internal Logic which embodies a mellowed-out riot-grrrl sound, like a road trip with your BFF in a wood panel station wagon. This album makes me want to live this summer in sun-drenched freedom. It also boasts approval from the likes of girl band goddess ... Read More
Urban homesteading is a fast-growing trend that encourages a  lifestyle of locally grown and home-brewed without all the aspects of trendiness and upper-classisim instead, replacing it with a D.I.Y sensibility. In other words, being radical about taking care of the planet and making a major social shift into a more money-savvy and environmentally conscious way of living.  In the new book, "Making It: Radical Home Ec for a ...  Here at the BUST offices we spent most of our days working on the current issue of the magazine. The rest if the time however, is spent looking at cute animal videos, playing a current blog post themed game of charades and discussing things like moon cups and plush stuffed reproductive organs. (don’t ask) Today we spent some of that time giggling at the YouTube channel “Cooking with Dog”.  I began watching more and more of the videos ... Read More
Shary Boyle is a young Canadian artist residing in Toronto, Canada whose work dabbles on the darker side of life. Her sculpture, projections, paintings and drawings are eerie and undoubtedly beautiful. It seems her work possesses an overtly feminist point of view that doesn’t take itself too seriously.  Her sculpture is perfection. The pieces are intricate, well thought-out and simply fantastic. She has even collaborated with the likes of Feist and ... Read More
