The Most Powerful Women in Media

Posted by: Teresa Lu in General |

In their latest New-York-themed issue, The Hollywood Reporter released a list of 35 Most Powerful People in Media. Of course, we just had to know - Where 'dem girls at? To my surprise, Oprah was not on the list. There were, however, fifteen female contenders of equal caliber. Let's take a moment to reminisce: It was 1974 when Barbara Walters became the first female co-host in network news. (Barb, by the way, is still on the list.) Today, ... Read More

Do you ever get sick of hearing about Beyoncé’s sex appeal, or reading a paragraph long description of Lana Del Rey’s lips? You’re not the only one. While feminists have often disparaged the physical representation of women in the media, it seems that journalistic coverage, particularly magazine profiles, might be just as superficial and ultimately detrimental. Carly Lewis recently dissected how male writers cover famous women, ... Read More

2 Chainz has one request in his latest track: dude just wants some “big booty hoes.” But not everyone is okay with this portrayal of women, especially when they see the music video for the popular “Birthday Song,” where the objectification of these women is so incredibly apparent. In the vid, 2 Chainz, Kanye West, and some male friends are partying it up in the company of beautiful women of color who have—you ... Read More

Are we all equal in death? Apparently not. According to an article by Dana Liebelson, enticingly titled “Newspapers Don’t Care When Notable Women Die,” obituaries continue to disproportionately report the deaths of famous men as opposed to women.  This year, The Los Angeles Times featured 36 women and 114 men on their list of prominent deaths. In The Washington Post, women made up just over one third of the list. In ... Read More

A new survey released by the Women’s Media Center (a non-profit organization founded by Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinem, and Robin Morgan) revealed that roughly three-quarters of the presidential coverage in newspapers is written by men.  The survey included well-known papers such as The New York Times, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal, among others.  From January 1 to April 25, 76% of articles were written by men, and from ... These days, with digitized media following you everywhere you go, a watch may no longer seem necessary for telling  time. However, there's nothing I love more than being able to tell if I'm running late in the shower or during my SAT classes—I’d like to think watches are still as much of piece of jewelry as any other accessory. But for those of you who still think the watch is antiquated, V-ZA-V™, a new start-up ... Read More

Stripper heels as potted plants may seem like a cheeky gift idea, but they've also got a lot of meaning for the owner of this Etsy shop. The impetus for Rachel Mahlke’s “Giddy Spinster” shop began a number of years ago, when a friend gave her some old pairs of outrageously tall heels that she could no longer use for work as an exotic dancer in San Francisco. There’s certainly a stigma in our culture about the art of ... Read More

Joan Rivers has been making us laugh while criticizing everyone (and their mom) since the 1960’s. She’s made a career of calling the stars out on their appearance and poor fashion choices in the least delicate way possible. No one is safe—we all get it, it’s her shtick.  But isn’t it pretty hard to watch women criticize women so cruelly sometimes? It’s a never-ending cycle of “Is she too fat? ... Read More

Newsflash: the mainstream media isn't always kind to women, particularly when it comes to their physical appearances. Thankfully, some celebrity ladies use their fame as a platform to fight the media’s (and our culture at large’s) damaging obsession with women's waistlines and butt sizes–Ashley Judd’s totally awesome rallying cry against tabloids comes to mind. And now Scarlett Johansson, in the Huffington Post, has ... Read More

If like me you have an addiction to spending way too much time on the internet looking at memes, you have probably already heard of Slenderman. If not, you are in for a delightfully spooky treat. Slenderman is an internet-generated urban myth. Atypical of most folklore, however, his origins are easily illuminated. On June the 8th 2009, the infamous online forums, Something Awful launched a “paranormal pictures” photoshopping ... Read More
