Gangsta Boo, or Lady Boo if you prefer, has been one of the baddest ladies in the rap game since 1991. As the first female member of Southern rap group, Three 6 Mafia, she spits clever rhymes with a super ill flow. Her newest mixtape, It's Game Involved, proves that there's no question Boo's still got it. I recommend "Bad Times (Featuring Big K.R.I.T & K-So)," but that's probably just my everlasting attraction to depressing music. If you're not in the mood for ... Read More

We’ve just cleared the first week of December, and I’m sure that for some, holiday exhaustion is already rearing its ghastly, tinsel-encrusted, eggnog-stained head. If you’ve already had your fill of the overplayed holiday pop standards that dominate the airwaves this time of year, fear not. There is hope on the horizon. Sufjan Stevens, everyone’s favorite musical Michigander (or mine, at least), has just released a new ... Read More

Pre-Internet, if you wanted to send a love letter to someone, you’d write it down on paper. Maybe you would add a few x's and o's, stickers, a mixtape (in my romantic imagination), a lipstick kiss for good measure, and send it through snail mail. But today, if you want to send a love letter, would you post it on the Internet? Or even address it to the Internet?
Now, there’s an entire site called “Dear Internet…” dedicated to ... Read More

Last week the DJ saved my lunch. Which, in turn, probably saved my life from a lifetime of bad burgers. On my typical nine-to-five, I duck out for a salad and promptly return to glue myself to a computer chair. Last week I had the pleasure of meeting up to interview my favorite DJ, Samantha Duenas, better known as SoSuperSam, at Shake Shack to experience the ultimate lunch break experience. Sam gave me some food for thought on what DJing is all about, which coast ... Read More
It's been a long time since the days of Salt & Pepa, with their trusty DJ Spinderella bringing it on the turntables. But female DJs are still bringing it hard, with one of my favorites spinning right now being DJ SoSuperSam. Her off-the-tables name is Samantha Duenas. You might know her from a couple different projects, as she is kind of a Jill of all trades. She worked publicity in LA and frequently guest blogs around the internet about all things style. Most ... Alexis Krauss, frontwoman for of-the-moment rockers Sleigh Bells, compiled some of her top musical picks for our April/May issue. Below are the tunes that make her tick.
“Genesis” by Grimes
“She’s already released two records, and I loved ‘Oblivion,’ the first single she put out, but I’m really into ‘Genesis.’ I’ve been listening to it pretty obsessively.”

Femcees have a hard time in the hip-hop game. The industry seems to think that it can only acknowledge the work of one female rapper at a time--and each new one gets compared to Nicki Minaj, no matter how little the two have in common. Though female rappers are often treated shittily, talented new acts are popping onto the scene every day. One of my current favorites is Nitty Scott, a Brooklyn-based rapper who spits ridiculous, clever, and insightful bars. Watch ... Read More
Like many people, I am beside myself over The Hunger Games movie. When I first saw the trailer I felt the sort of excitement that Harry Potter fans have known for years. Do you think they’ll build a Panem Park in Orlando right next to the The Wizarding World? I hope they make it super realistic, with a dome where you have to fight for weapons and dodge swarms of hybrid killer bees. I should start teaching myself to wield a trident just to be ready.

Like many people who work in an office, I find chair-dancing to be an integral part of getting through my day. If we learned anything in 2011, it's that sitting down is definitely killing all of us right now, and until I get that treadmill desk, I plan to fidget my way to a marginally longer life.
This week's regimen has been soundtracked by this excellent Soundcloud mix of Nicki Minaj's mixtape hits, made by NYC DJ Sparber. It's got ... Read More
