Rock On Reena!

BY intern Amber in General |

Okay so I have to tell you about a wonderful friend of mine, Reena Shah . I am always so inspired by this powerful artist with a knockout smile and spirit. I don't know if Reena knows this, but she is breaking boundaries. Minority actresses the world over have a hard time being embraced by the Anglo-obsessed film and entertainment industry, but Reena has managed to be a successful actress/singer/dancer all while embracing her Indian-American roots. You can see her ... Read More

Grunge, the photos

BY Laurie in General |

My main squeeze, photographer Michael Lavine, has a new photography book out titled Grunge. The foreward is written by Thurston Moore, and the book contains stunning photos of street kids in Seattle in the late 80's, as well as lots of seminal bands from the early 90's. It's pretty cool, and I'm super proud of him. Check out our review and a few images. Grunge By Michael Lavine and Thurston Moore (Abrams Image) The aesthetic of the underground music scene has been ... Read More
Anyone ever attend the Lilith Fair back in the day? When LF was in its hey-day, which was 1997-1999, it was one of the highest grossing touring festivals in the world and included such spectacular ladies such as Sarah McLachlan (who also co-founded!), Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliot, The Pretenders, Nelly Furtado, Jewel, Queen Latifah, Indigo Girls, Tegan and Sara, and many others. About six months ago, LF co-founder Terry McBride announced through ... Read More
Our friend Michael sent this over, and it is precisely why I love YouTube so much. Not only do we get to peruse our favorite year in fashion, 1968, but I now have a new musical obsession: the way out sounds of one Mr. Mort Garson, an electronic composer. ... Read More
These past few weeks have presented two different kinds of swarms: ladybugs, (there is literally one stuck in my hair as I type this,) and skinny attractive people carrying instrument cases who are here touring as part of the CMJ Music Marathon. It’s hard to choose which bands to leave the house for, but a few have such a loud buzz surrounding them that you feel compelled to go sniff them out for yourself. One of those bands is Brunswick, New ... Read More

This Saturday, October 24th, Brooklyn Indie Market presents Steampunk II .For one day, Carroll Gardens won't belong to Moms with strollers. The only handlebars will be carefully groomed mustaches. The Raveonettes are one of those bands I've been listening to on and off since high school -- I was always kind of into them, but never jazzed enough to sing their praises on the Internet. Cut to their concert Sunday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. I take it all back, Raveonettes. Why didn't I realize how awesome you were before? The Black Angels got things off to a trippy start with their heavily distorted psychedelic tunes. And they were LOUD -- I'm ... Read More
Jemina Pearl, of Be Your Own Pet buzz, is out with a new single titled, 'I Hate People' featuring Iggy Pop. I just saw the diner-inspired video (with Thurston Moore!) and I must say, I find the campy bits featuring old pics of Mr. Pop quite cute. Definitely check it out below. You can also check out Pearl's personal blog here and her myspace page here!nicole! Video courtesy of ... Read More

Jack Can Do No Wrong...

BY Web Intern in General |

While being a sicky-poo this weekend I caught up on YouTube videos and boy, I found a unique diddy. Jack's (wouldn't it be nice to be on a first name basis with him? I think so) most recent project, The Dead Weather, just put out a new video for the single I Cut Like A Buffalo a couple of weeks back and I can't believe I am this late in seeing it! Jack looking as fine as ever in a video he himself directed?! I'll take it! And another thing, if you're familiar with ... Read More
