Three members of Pussy Riot who were arrested (Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Ekaterina Samucevic) currently remain in jail as their appeal hearing has been postponed to October 10. This court hearing may be the last chance for the musicians to be set free; alternate option would be sending the women to remote penal detention centers where they fear for their safety.
As this important date for the band approaches, J.D. Samson and Michael ... Read More

The three members of Pussy Riot who are currently imprisoned (Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich) are fighting against being relocated from Moscow to a remote penal colony somewhere hundreds of miles away. There’s a possibility of the three women being set free on October 1 when they’ll head back to court to find out if their two year prison sentence has been repealed. The women don’t seem to think ... “Free Pussy Riot” as a slogan is approaching meaninglessness-by-repetition, like when you say “banana” so many times in a row that you forget it’s a word. But despite the echo chamber effect of its proliferation, the demand itself hasn’t lost value as a legitimate goal.

Two members of Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist punk band that has taken over the news lately, have fled Russia. There are 12 remaining members of the band still in Russia, not including the three who were recently sentenced to prison terms. The two that have fled are reportedly trying to avoid persecution by Russian police, as five members of the band were part of the infamous protest against Putin in February, but only three were arrested. The band stated on its ... Read More

A blogger named Clarissa is pissed off about Pussy Riot. But not about the censorship that resulted in their public arrest and conviction: no, she’s pissed because they’re not the right kind of feminists.
“I would have been bugged by their actions no matter what, but it especially pains me that they have chosen to call themselves feminists,” Clarissa writes in a post titled “Do Ukraine and Russia Need Feminism?”

The verdict is in for Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot, and it's not good. The three members were found guilty on charges of hooliganism in a trial held on Friday. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich were sentenced to two years each in prison, due to their participation in a guerrilla protest/performance in Moscow’s main cathedral back in March. That day, the women sang a “punk prayer” in which they ... Read More
