Five illustrations of girls in blue dresses and bows appear against the white canvas. “Show me the ugly child,” says the soft-spoken woman to the young black girl barely above the table’s edge. The illustrations are an array of five different skin shades--light to dark. The little girl’s finger lightly touches the last illustration on the canvas. Her tiny hand darts back.
“And why is she the ugly child?”

Remember when a bunch of bigots, assholes, and douchebags decided they needed to give their two cents about biracial relationships and families? That was pretty cool. It was even better when they shared so many of these lovely thoughts that Cheerio's had to disable the comments section for their YouTube video of the commercial. (In case you missed it, the commercial simply featured a little girl asking her caucasian mother about the healthiness of Cheerios, then ... Read More

Between Houston and Dallas rests a bucolic town, Jasper, with elegant pine trees dotting its landscape and a charming nickname, the “Butterfly Capital of Texas.” However, the town is home to some notoriously ugly racial history – in 1998, three white men killed a black man, James Byrd Jr., by chaining him to a pickup truck and driving around until he was pummeled to death by the town's country roads. Just last year, Jasper hired its first black ... Read More

Leave it to racist internet trolls to ruin an innocent, family-friendly commercial.
The source of all the unnecessary controversy is the newest 31-second “Just Checking” commercial brought to you by Cheerios. The premise? It’s as cute and completely uncontroversial as it gets: an adorable girl foils her dad after asking her mom if the cereal is really heart-healthy. The outcome is one messy and awww-worthy moment. Check out the video below.

At New York Fashion Week, designers tried to convince us that bondage is in, neon shag body wear is trendy, and unwearable structural pieces are totally hot right now. But at least they didn’t send models down the runway in blackface. Think no one would be ignorant enough to paint a white girl black for an “African Queen” photo shoot? Well think again. French magazine Número is embroiled in a public relations shit show this week after ... Read More

There’s been a lot of talk lately about Internet bullying and the damaging effects it has on those who are targeted. Remember the story of Amanda Todd, the teen who committed suicide in October after years of constant online and physical shaming? Google “teen commits suicide after online bullying” and you will get over 4.5 million hits--a staggering amount. That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to damage done to people of any age ... Read More

On Sunday night, 20-year-old Sharmeka Moffitt was walking through a park in northeastern Lousiana when three men approached her, covered her in flammable liquid, and set her on fire. Sharmeka put out the flames with a spigot and called 911. She suffered burns to over half of her body and was still in the hospital in critical condition as of yesterday.
The three men also wrote the letters ‘KKK’ and a racial slur on her car in a paste-like ... Read More

We know that discrimination against women still exists, but sometimes we forget the fact that discrimination is not distributed equally to each woman. A recent Forbes article by political strategist Atima Omara-Alwala revealed some horrifying facts about health care discrimination among black women.
African American women, as just one example of many, are three times more likely to experience unwanted pregnancy and four times more likely to die of ... Read More
