Marnie Stern is rock personified. She writes the kind of music you can thrash around to (or ride your bike to and feel badass), and is just plain cool. Before the release of her fourth album The Chronicles of Marmia back in March, Stern hit up the SXSW festival. Luckily, MTV’s Weird Vibes were there to film it, producing the short documentary ‘This Is Marnie Stern’. In the documentary, Marnie and her cute doggie Fig charm ... Read More

BUST SXSW Retrospective

Posted by: BUST Magazine in Music Stuff |

Weeks after the fact, we're still reeling from the rush of our three-day SXSW party. If you're as nostalgic as we are, check out our compilation of highlights from The Pussy Palace including Clairy Browne, So So Glos, Widowspeak and more, courtesy of Join the Studio. Bust SXSW Retrospective from JoinTheStudio on ... Read More

During the first day of BUST’s three-day showcase at SXSW, we were graced with the beautiful sounds of dream-poppers Widowspeak at the Pussy Palace. The indie rockers’ Western-influenced sound was a perfect fit for Austin (duh), and Molly Hamilton’s soft-sung vocals created a chill, almost ethereal atmosphere. In case you missed our live stream of the kickass house show, watch Widowspeak perform a shoegaze-y ditty ... Read More

THURSDAY - DAY 1 @ SXSW It's 5AM and I'm running down the stairs of a Greenpoint, Brooklyn walk-up with the wild delusion that I'll get a cab to get me to Newark airport in time for my 6:30 flight. $80 and an hour and twenty-six minutes later I'm panting, out of breath, in the remnants of a line boarding my plane to Austin. There are leather jackets, guitar cases, vanity sunglasses, and black band t-shirts everywhere. The mass exodus of the ... Read More

If you like punk, weed, and lo-fi rock 'n' roll then you'll probably love Colleen Green. If you don't like all of those things, you'll probably still love Colleen Green. It's hard not to like a musician who makes catchy 50's/60's doo-wop-ish garage rock completely by herself. She writes and records her own music, plays all of her instruments, books her own tours, hand-paints her t-shirts, draws comics, and makes zines, all while keeping a ... Read More

Feminist icon and punk legend Kathleen Hanna is one of my many heroes. Defiant activist, outspoken pro-choicer, amazing songwriter, skilled musician, and prolific zine author, my friends and all kind of wish we were her. Her ground-breaking riot grrrl band Bikini Kill changed punk forever but Hanna wasn’t going to stop there. After Bikini Kill broke up in 1997, she went on to start electronic-dance-punk band Le Tigre, which is now ... Read More

Movie Review: Electrick Children

Posted by: Katrina Pallop in Movies |

Rebecca Thomas’s debut feature Electrick Children is a crackling, captivating film that’s equal parts allegory and acid trip. At the center of the story is Rachel (Julia Garner), an inquisitive and rebellious teenager living in the mid-nineties. Julia has been raised by a fundamentalist Mormon family, living on a compound in Utah. On the occasion of her fifteenth birthday, Rachel is asked by her father and church leader (Billy ... Read More
