Marnie Stern is mad. "I can't get one f***ing drink," she complains in the documentary I am Marnie Stern. Why can't one of the best metal guitarists have a beer at SXSW? Because she doesn't have a wristband, and nobody recognizes her.
I've typed every variation of the phrase, "female guests sit in with 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers," into search engines, but no cigar. This only proves what we all already know: it's not that there aren't women doing stuff ... Read More

Upset has the makings for being one of the best bands out there right now and surprise, surprise: they totally are. Former drummer for Best Coast and Vivian Girls, Ali Koehler, takes on guitar and lead vocals, ex-La Sera member Jennifer Prince sings and plays lead guitar, and last we have drummer Patty Schemel of Hole and Death Valley Girls fame. The trio’s collective punk roots shine through on their latest project, Upset, the band you wish existed when you ... Read More
The Swedish electronic group has added more US dates to their tour schedule, after an amazing response to their "Late Show" performance with David Letterman, and a run at SXSW.
“Following appearances at Coachella and Canadian Music Week, Little Dragon will continue on the festival circuit with an appearance at Bonnaroo 2014. The band will run through the Southern US and will finish up this string of dates with a show at New York City's Terminal ... Read More

SXSW has become such a mega-star in the summer festival constellation that it can be hard to sift through the clutter and find the one band/film/event that makes it all worthwhile. I personally find the music festival way too hot to endure and the "Interactive" events a bit too chilly — but the film festival? The film festival is just right. I saw so many great films (and missed so many others...) that I wish I could have stayed another week. But for ... Read More

Trigger warning: This post contains content relating to eating disorders.
Lady Gaga's SXSW performance was sick, and not in a good way. "Vomit artist" Millie Brown [TW: extreme depictions of vomiting] joined the pop diva onstage, jamming her fingers down her throat and puking bright green milk onto Lady Gaga's breasts as the singer played the drums.Sizes above 14. Free pizza. Dinner dates. Bikinis, lingerie, spring break. As a girl, I know at least ... Read More

Fort Tilden, a new film by rising directors/writers Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers, just won the grand jury prize at the SXSW film festival in Austin.
Allie (Clare McNulty) and Harper (Bridey Elliott) are my next door neighbors back home in Brooklyn... or they could be. Like a good post-Seinfeld New Yorker, I don't actually know my neighbors very well. The truth is, the writers/directors of this film should be commended for their tongue-in-cheek accuracy ... The first doc I’ve seen here at the SXSW festival is VESSEL, a powerful, knock-your-Socks-off documentary directed by Diana Whitten, centering on the Dutch abortion rights activist Dr. Rebecca Gomperts. Gomperts’s idea was to sail a ship flying the Dutch flag to countries where abortion is illegal and take women out 11 miles out into international waters to perform legal abortions. Talk about fearless in the face of adversity; WOW! The ... Read More

SXSW stepped outside of expectations this year by offering interactive sessions and committee discussions on an array of social and political topics. The special event series is holding conversations on an array of topics, with titles like Global Impact, Health, Science, Business, Art,WTF and Beyond, Career, Design, Sports, and Entertainment. The series is engaging and even the medical discussions are intriguing, topics ranging from Embarrassing Bodies: ... Read More

As a several year veteran of Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival (which, for those in the know, is the dubious lovechild of Burning Man and Coachella), I now feel able to offer advice on that fraught annual conundrum: should I go to _____ music festival? Your friends are probably going. Kirsten Stewart is probably going. And above all things, a newly reunited OutKast might be going – and if anything in this world is worth braving foul weather, crowds, noise, ... Read More

Natalie Ribbons of Agent Ribbons (and friend of BUST!) formed 60s-style, indie pysch-pop band, Tele Novella, just in time for the South by Southwest music festival in March. Based in Austin, Texas, the band is composed of other Agent Ribbons and Voxtrot members. Here's their dreamy new single, "Umbrella at the Station," a bonus track from the "No Excalibur" 7" that came out in the beginning of November.
