On Sunday evening, every single bar I passed on New York’s Second Avenue was packed with both women and men, screaming at the top of their lungs and cheering for the USA in their World Cup match against Portugal.
According to CNN, similar scenes were scattered across Iran this past Saturday. Restaurants were packed with fans - both women and men - who were excitedly cheering on their country’s team in the nail-biting match against ... Read More
“I know that football can be really hard to understand, especially for us women, because the female eye can’t actually see spherical shapes. Side note: that’s why high heels aren’t circular,” says Lex Croucher, dripping in layers of sarcasm.
I’ve been following Lex Croucher, also known as tyrannosauruslexxx on youtube, since I was 15. I’ll admit, at first I just thought she was pretty and I’m kind of like a bird who ... Read More
Unfortunately, the world of sports is one that is riddled with sexism - especially the world of my favorite (and the world's favorite) sport, soccer. The current president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, is infamous for his sexist stances in regards to the game. In 2004, he stated that the women's uniforms should have "tighter shorts" and "low-cut shirts" to for a more "female aesthetic" to make the game more interesting. I’ve never felt the need to justify ... Read More
Finally, FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, has lifted its infamous ban on headscarves. The ban, created due to “safety concerns,” was instituted in 2007. FIFA has now proposed a headscarf that is fastened with Velcro instead of pins, and is permitting female soccer players to test them out over a trial period of four months.
As a fan of both soccer and human rights, all I can say is, “It’s about time!” ... Read More
In a total mindf*ck for me and basically everyone interested in women's sports, sources---from The Guardian to ESPN---are confirming that the Women's Professional Soccer league has been cancelled, even though the United States National team just qualified to play in the Olympics.
The reason seems to be that team owner Dan Borislow, who has a history of clashing with WPS officials, is battling it out big-time with league owners in the court room. ... Read More
